For most credit card users, flat rate rewards credit cards is the most convenient and efficient way to earn cash back or travel rewards. But savvy credit card users know that to get the most rewards, they must earn them through cards that offer bonus categories. Bonus categories give additional points on specific types of purchases, such as at restaurants or supermarkets.

Some cards rotate their bonus categories every quarter, which may seem confusing and troublesome, but the bonus rewards can be very high, which makes it worth the effort for rewards hunters.

Here are the best credit cards that have bonus categories that change from quarter to quarter, or that you can change on your own.

The Chase Freedom® card lets you earn 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate. Enjoy new 5% categories each quarter. Unlimited 1% cash back on all other purchases. There is no annual fee.
