Facebook and Skype has helped a lot in that department. I'm still a huge fan of snail mail. I love sending cards. Cards are inexpensive, stamps are inexpensive-ish, and it's a great way to show someone you care.

Keep in contact via e-mail and Skype. E-mail is a convenient option when the other party is not available to talk. When you want to talk or see each other face to face then Skype is a nice alternative if you cannot meet up with the person.
