We celebrate frugally by making homemade gifts
Stay at home and spend time together, nothing fancy
We're going to keep it low-key, a cookout in the park and that's just about it. Somehow I got talked into a restaurant brunch for mother's day, and it was way too much money for a meal.
We started having a BBQ and potluck with family a couple of years ago. It's a great way to have a fun and frugal celebration.
I call Dad long-distance on Father's Day, but don't buy him gifts. He's never been interested in gifts anyway, so that helps me out a lot! ;o)
We're giving the gift of yardwork to my dad this year :-)
We eat at home instead of going out to a restaurant to save money.
Make a homemade card and gift.
We get together and eat a meal, visit, and I give him a very small, inexpensive gift.
Our younger kid made something in Sunday School. If he ever gets back to me, I'll make hubby what he wants for dinner, probably seafood. Half-priced cadets from BJ's.
I send mother's and father's day gifts together to my family to save on shipping.
By living out of town and sending a card with a Groupon or a great used book via media mail! :)
My kids usually make a card and I cook on the grill
I usually just send him a nice card, or maybe go out to breakfast together.
The kids always find DIY's Father's Day crafts on pinterest to make dad!
BBQ at my sisters! All the dads love having dinner from the grill and we all bring something to the gathering so the hostess (my sister) isn't stuck doing/buying everything. Nothing like sitting outside on a nice day with family & friends and celebrating the dads!
As for gifts, we're very low key. Usually something for the yard or a new tool that can be used around the house. This year my kids are getting their dad a new fishing pole so he can use it at the campground we go to. It's a gift he will use all season long!
We don't buy gifts, our fathers get a card and my hubby gets an ice cream sundae (his only request!) He does love a good ice cream sundae!
Grill!
I get the kids involved and make him some kind of craft.

My son-in-law wants to go with his wife and two kids to the nearby community swim center for a Father's Day picnic. They already have season passes for the kids and their mother, so all they will have to pay is $6 for the dad. As for my husband and father of my children, he will have the company of his loving wife and son for baseball on TV and hamburgers on the grill.
I realized early on that what my husband really wanted was some time with other dad friends, a beer, and to BBQ outside. So, we started a tradition of having one (or more, when possible!) of our closest dad friends and their kids and wives, come over for a chill BBQ in the back yard. Everyone brings something to share for dinner, I make sure there's cold beer, and the dads relax by the grill as the kids run around together. We moms usually enjoy a beverage too, and keep an eye on the kids while we catch up and laugh with the dads. It's been great!

For my dad, the Father's Day celebration is more about time spent together than about spending money or buying things.
We eat at home and celebrate with homemade cards and lots of hugs.
Instead of dining out at an expensive restaurant, we do a family pot luck to celebrate our love for Dad. He really enjoys the time with his kids and Grands in a more relaxed setting. We enjoy it too and especially the great food and great company.

We moved Father's Day to Saturday, and I'll make dinner at home. The kids will visit that day. Sunday, my husband and I are going to the beach. We will pack our own lunch. There is also a free concert out at the beach that day. Sounds perfect to me!
I'll BBQ or cook some of his favorite foods for dinner, the kids make him homemade cards, and I the weather's nice, we'll head to the local beach (pond) or take a hike somewhere local. We don't do gifts on Mom/Dad's day, but concentrate on having a nice day with the emphasis on spending time together doing something we enjoy rather than spending money.

We splurged a little on ingredients but had a nice dinner at home instead of eating at a restaurant.
I baked my dad a cake and got him a card. I didn't have a lot of money to spend this year.
