Try this with your kids.

Get 3 piggy banks: 1 for saving, 1 for tithing, 1 for spending.

Instead of giving your kid $1, give him/her 10 dimes. Show him/her how to split his/her money among the three banks. Teach them how to save. They'll be excited to learn something new and watch their money grow.
