I hate Girl Scout cookies. Girl Scouts themselves are cool, and I support them, but goodness me, do I ever hate those cookies. This alone has saved me hundreds of dollars over the course of my life.

I highly recommend learning to loathe things like cookies.

If you do make your own Girl Scout cookies, I implore you to make a donation to your local Girl Scout Council. Girl Scouting provides so many opportunities to girls and young women, but much of that wouldn't be possible without the money cookie sales provide.

Defnitely agree that you shouldn't use this as a substitution for supporting your local group.  However, if you find yourself needing a Thin Mint in the off season, or you didn't buy enough to meet your needs, this is a great way to get through until the next order date!

Dollar General has started selling a knock off cookie, Ive only tasted the "thin mints" (because they are the only flavor they are selling I like) and they taste just like them!!! Only 1.85 a box!

I was a girl scout and I know I should support the local trooops and all but the price of them have just skyrocketed. (But again, what hasnt?)

I never really enjoyed their cookies and simply stopped buying them after the hubbub a few years ago about their "nutritional value".

I suppose you could indeed make your own at home. Just about any cookie can be made at home but does it mean we have to make a donation because we like the cookies?

If anything, they should learn to become creative and bring something new to the marketplace so they can encourage the general public to purchase (therefore increasing their contributions) something.

Whoa folks, a lot of constructive criticism for the Girl Scouts in the comments over the past day or so. I like Double My Net Worth's suggestion of changing the business model. The Girl Scouts do need to be more creative and why should their signature fundraiser be only about selling cookies? Its time for change and creativity. Also, if the do stay with the cookies, its time to make them better and more gourmet (and how about brownies-yummy). I think many only buy them to help the kids (and not for the taste), but they would sell more if they tasted better.

As a few writers noted previously, these cookie sales help the Girl Scouts raise money. Let's not forget that the Girl Scouts reach a lot of girls, improve their self esteem, provide them role models, and leadership skills.

Many Girl Scout troops do not have parents that can afford materials, supplies, excursions and activities for their girls. These troops completely depend upon those cookie sales. So, if you want to make their cookies throughout the year, great. But, don't STOP supporting this amazing organization and the millions of girls it helps.

Jeez. It's a freakin fundraiser. You buy the cookies to help the scouts.

If they can't sell cookies, what are going to sell that people want? Marijuana?

@consumermiser - What can they sell that costs under $5, so anyone can "splurge" and buy one? What's also "good for you" unlike the yummy cookies?

Girl Scout toothbrushes
Girl Scout toothpaste
Girl Scout dental floss
Girl Scout light bulbs
Girl Scout pens and pencils
Girl Scout shoelaces
Girl Scout potatoes and onions
Girl Scout oatmeal
Girl Scout toilet paper
Girl Scout socks
Girl Scout earplugs

No. I want Girl Scout cookies.

Hey,

I can't believe the surprise when I come looking for tips on budgeting and find out how to make gild scout cookies.

Why I say my wife would kill me, is because she is addicted to their mint chocolate cookies, and if either one of us learned how to make them, two bad things would happen.

1. We'd both gain weight.
2. It wouldn't be as much a surprise when the girls come to the door to sell the cookies, and we wouldn't have the big cookie sale to look forward to every year when they're fundraising.

Cheers

I think that you need to check and see, my understanding is that flood insurance is available. One of the problems that the public may encounter is an agent that has not been to flood insurance education to sell it. That might have alot to do with it.. I think he said the other day that 33% of the claims for flood, were not in the flood plain. But, most people will not buy due to paying another premium….
