you can save even more money if you do this with a car battery, which is 12 volts also. however, because car batteries contain much more energy, you want to partially discharge it first! the best way to do this is to take a metal bar and put it across the battery terminals for ten minutes or so. then use the claw part of a hammer to crack it open so you can remove the individual cells. make sure you do all of this outside, as it will be a bit messy.
