Cracking the Infamous McDonalds Monopoly Game

ShareThis

Several years ago, to my shame, I got hooked on the McDonald's Monopoly Game. My friends and I were eating there daily to share tokens and hopefully bag that big prize. But the chances of winning were non-existent (certainly on the big prizes anyway) because the whole thing was rigged. However, now that it's all above board, could you actually win the big $1 million, or even some of the smaller prizes? Well, yes. But your chances of winning are all based on the odds of finding one particular piece from each set. (See also: 6 Ways to Win Free Stuff From Blog Giveaways)

What are those pieces?

Like any professionally organized, mass-market game, the odds of winning the big prizes are never in your favor. There is no randomness here; it's not like McDonald's just printed up a whole bunch of pieces and let them loose on the community. There are very few of some pieces and literally millions of others. When you get a yellow piece, for instance, it will almost never be Ventnor Avenue. That's one of those pieces that is controlled. The table below outlines the piece from each set that is in demand, the prize for getting it and the number of pieces available in the game.

So, what does this mean? Well, if you scour eBay right now, or your local Craigslist, you will see dozens of people either looking for the pieces above, or selling large collections of pieces that contain none of the above. Either way, you should stay away. If you have one of the pieces above, you have technically won, as getting the other pieces in the set is very easy. But if you're looking to buy pieces, unless someone has stumbled on one of the rare pieces without knowing it, you're just buying worthless tokens.

With this in mind, print the table above and keep it on you if you're playing the Monopoly game. When you get a piece, check it against the list; if it's there, you're a winner. If it's Boardwalk, please, feel free to share your winnings with the humble writer of this story.

Do all yours say #272. I was wondering which is the "rare" one?

Is there a limit on how much you can buy in a given day? My wife and I never play these kinds of games but we stopped at Mcd on our way back from Florida and we peeled the pieces off of her sweet tea and she got Boardwalk. I think its worth spending a few hundred dollars to take the chance of picking up Park Place.

If you have Boardwalk...Congratulations you should be a millionaire. If you need a park place..I have three

I haven't ever really been interested in this game before. But I am addicted to the sweet tea, I usually get three or so a week. Yesterday I went in and got the mediteranean piece, so I guess you can win you just have to not be trying.. Well i guess it's good that i won i'm just getting paid back for all the tea I've had since it's come out... Good luck to all of you that are still trying though.

That Monopoly background music is hypnotizing. I think i like it!

Anyone want to split $50? Let me know if you get Mediterranean. =) Thanks for the heads up on the game. I remember a news story about a trash collector peeling off an instant $1 million prize from an unpeeled cup. Not sure if it was real, but it was on TV!

If you have trouble with the online game working, then use the faster coded entry link that is at the top of the page. You don't get the cute little board to watch your piece go around. But you probably also won't get hung up and lose your codes.

Park Place (Stamp #273) & Boardwalk (Stamp #274). One (1) prize is available. The winner will receive a one million dollar ($1,000,000) annuity payable as $50,000 per year over 20 years with no interest. Odds of winning are approximately 1 in 591,287,650. (ARV: $1,000,000 at maturity)

So there may be three Boardwalk tickets out there, but only the first one is a winner. And those odds are higher than most lotteries.

I won a 10000 American Express card in the 2007 game by landing on Free Parking. The game is real, its just up to you to play it. If u dont believe i won, check the winners list. My last name is Tullis and I live in Americus, GA

If u decide to play have fun and good luck!

Guest's picture
Guest 71

I don't doubt that you won, but it cheats. I rolled a 6 and it moved me 7 spaces. If it would have moved me the correct spaces, i would have landed on boardwalk and I already had park place, so i wou7ld have won $100,000.00
so it clearly ripped me off and I have spoken to others and it has done the same. I guess that maybe I need to video tape myself playing next time so I can send it to McDonalds and show them!!

Guest's picture
Guest

If you go to "My Monopoly" it says what you rolled, where you started, and where you landed. You can check to make sure the spaces are right.

Guest's picture
Guest

lol if you seriously have one on the rare pieces you can have the common piece. why get boardwalk then spend 130 dollars on food to get park place f*ck that, i have 6 park places.

also that list is different now, there is only 1 boardwalk!! they all get printed off they get put in some roller it mixes them all up and they go out to cups boxes etc. theres no certain item clause, no regional distribution just plain old luck.

Guest's picture
Guest

Not Boardwalk, obviously, hahaha, but Park Place. Well, answer me this, good sir: do I have good chances if I don't aim very high?

Here's a better question: when you say they put out three Boardwalks, and 15,000 Meditterean Avenues, do you mean per McDonalds stamp delivery, or all over the country?

Guest's picture
Guest

Cmon now, do you think McD's would put the pieces on cups when someone will just throw it away? They lose a tax write off. Hurts them more than it helps them. They save those pieces internally for someone to write in, then mail them off randomly. Why do you think there is such a small limit on write-ins? And chances are better than average if someone is writing in then they are playing the game, meaning they get to have their tax write-off and make someone happy. So unless you write in for a piece, you have no possibility of winning any of the high dollar prizes. Such a simple idea, figured more people would realize that by now.

Sure it's really fun to play these games but guys...we are in a recession and we are GIVING our money to these fat pigs. I mean sure you have a chance of winning a few hundred dollars but the chance of you winning the big prize is one in a billion. Let me ask you this? You are spending what $1.00 - $8.00 a DAY for many of you for these pieces? Right? Well why don't you just buy a lottery ticket. It's one dollar, about the same odds, and you don't have to eat that nasty food? I'll tell you why. Because the thought of monopoly sounds fun. All they are doing is taking your money and making you all think that you have a chance of winning these HUGE prizes. The amount that people are going to spend on finding these tickets should be used to pay down your credits cards, your loans, save it for when things get worse. But if you want to play this game then go for it. Or you could just do something equally stupid and take five dollars each day until the game ends and through it out the window. Or put one hundred dollars in a bag and go hand it to McDonald's. At least when America goes down...McDonald's will still be filthy f*cking rich!

Guest's picture

You are so right! Mcd's monopoly game is truly a waste of money.

Guest's picture

I agree i know its easy to get hooked on the game but people need to stop and think dont go to McDonald's and buy food just so you can get game pices use that money to go in your gas tank or buy real food at the grocery store and if you relly think about it the game is relly like the lottery! so dont get hooked or buy stupid pices from people on the internet its just a big rip off!!! so stop and relly think about it

The chart above is ceartinly accurate. iI have pretty much all the properties except those. Now no im not goin out of my way for these tokens but i do eat there a lot cuz its cheap.

Guest's picture
Jason

I went into mcdonalds and found about 10 unused stamps(none winningbut had codes) I took some of them and later saw a Mcdonalds employee throw the rest in the garbage!

Guest's picture

i landed on go and it said it would send my prize to my email and it never did.. what kind of prizes do you get when landing on go anyways?

Guest's picture

hoping to win 50K or something to make it all worthwhile. If you finally do win the money, you'll need to put it toward your quadruple bypass surgery to clean out the Big Macs and Fries in there. Can anybody win at this game?

Guest's picture
Guest

I can't believe everyone is complaining about a chance to win. I think it's pretty cool that there are even 3 Boardwalks. I thought there would be only one. Most of these comments rank right up there with the loser who sued fast food places for making him fat. Come on, people. Be responsible. Be an adult. Don't cry and whine about not winning--I mean, there are so many people playing this game, why should you think you're special? Yes, you probably won't win. Duh. Don't eat at McDonald's if you're bothered by the greasy, fatty food, but if you like it, enjoy, and hope for the one-in-a-million chance that you can win something.

Guest's picture
Guest-IL

Earlier comment says the rare winning pieces are mailed off instead of putting on containers, let they be thrown away. This is so McD can get a tax write-off for giving away the $1M.

It's good publicity to say that someone won the $1M, but does McD really care if they "lose" the $1M? They made $2.3 BILLION last year. What do they care if they save $1M?

What I want to know:

1) Is there always a winner for each high-value category?
2) Is the list of rare pieces the same year after year?

Guest's picture

Definetyl bullshit. so i was sitting on the just visiting space and i rolled. it said i rolled 10. but it only moved me 9 spaces. thus preventing me from winning the shell refillible gift card

Hey everyone, I thought I would e-mail for online help to see if the game was rigged or not. Not like they would tell me or anything but this is the response or responses that I got. My orignal question is at the bottom preceeded by the answer. Above that is my reply and so forth. It seemed like alot of beating around the bush if you ask me. What do you think?

Dear Valued Customer:Thank you for contacting the MONOPOLY® 2008 Game at McDonald’s® Email help link.

The codes at the bottom of the shown Game Stamps are unique to the Online Game. After entering the code and rolling the dice (see section C from the Official Rules), participant's game token will automatically move a number of spaces which corresponds to the total of the numbers shown on the dice. Thanks for the information but you didn't answer my question at all. You actually didn't even seem to attempt it. What I was asking as you can clearly see below; is if the outcome of the roll of the dice is predetermined or just dependent on luck. For example: I only need one property or piece of each prize group and each time I roll the dice I never land on one that I need. A couple of time around the board it's believeable but 4 times is getting kind of "fishy".
What I wondered is if, to limit entries, certain spots may only be landed on so many times a day or if it's just luck of the roll.
Please respond again, as I would really like to know.
Thanks in advance

Subject: CA: Online Game Question

Comment/Question: I was wondering if during the online game the outcome of the roll of the dice is predetermined to reduce potential winning entries? It seems like it is since I've collected all the properties except for one of each and haven't collected anything new for the last 4 trips around the board. I will continue playing but I would like to know if the rolls are predetermined.
Thanks in advance.

It's pretty unbelievable how he totally avoided the question...lol. I have been playing the stupid online version and after reading your attempt to find out if the dice numbers are rolled at random( which I also have been wondering, seeing as how I am only missing 1 property for every set that I own.) But I wont be buying anymore McDonalds that's for sure.

Yes, Ok people, once again take a real good look at the winning pieces as no one is going to simply give you one....
Let's review..the rare unseen pieces that nobody has, expcept maybe emplyees who steal them reguarly. (this game is sooo whacked)
Please...think and stop offering up the millions of pieces everybody has and gets. Use your brain... MCdonalds, if you continue to run this stupid contest at least tell you employees and restaurunts to give pieces out as 9 time out of ten you have to ask, or they are out or some other bs..

I have a good idea of how to win this thing (not the online version).. well not all of the winnings but still.. If we all came together and discussed the pieces we have..If we found a winning combination between some of us here we can split the money.. Let me know what u think.. There should be a website where all people can have this opportunity to collaborate so we can make sure all the winning pieces are won.

I also collect the coke points. I have gotten a few good things on the coke site, and have won 150 points at the McDonald's on line game. It wasn't the big bucks, but 150 is equal to 15 cases of coke I didn't have to buy. It worked out okay for me. Today my local McD ran out of large fry boxes with the codes on it. I was disappointed because it took me this long to figure out how to get 4 codes with a small amount of money. 3.88 for a double cheese, lg fry and a large iced tea. Sometimes I wonder about myself.

Guest's picture

So I am already a winner? I collected boardwalk about a week ago and have yet to find parkplace. I guess I will visit it a few more times if it is that easy to get parkplace.

Guest's picture

That used to happen to me years ago when I played too... go back and check it, I guarantee it's Parkplace.

Guest's picture

Don't be a dumbass!! If any of you really have Boardwalk or any of the big winning pieces then start buying everything with a game ticket on it until you get the rest of the pieces! The game isn't on much longer and they're already running out of tickets on some items. The tickets are non-transferable and they do validate the winners, so don't cheat. The online game is separate - there is a number to call on the McDonald's Monopoly site if you win. (Google "McDonalds Monopoly rare pieces" to find out if you have a rare one.)

So, two people on this board claim to have Boardwalk? Very very unlikely.

I have been trying to get into the playatmcd.com site for 2 days now to play and the site won't comes up. The websit address will show up in a google box that says something like this is not a site.
is anyone else having this problem? there are only a few more days and i still have codes to put in.
And it always rips me off codes. I even contacted them online and the answer came back just like there stupid rules about 10 per day(mine keep saying the code was already used).
so does anyone know why the site isnt working or if it is over or what?

To the poster who said they landed on community chest 8 times in a row- that is awesome, but not because the came ended, it doesn't end 10/31 it ends November 3rd 2008.

I normally do not frequent McDonalds, except during the monopoly game, however, now that I know how to find out what pieces are rare and which are not online, I shall curtail my involvement next year.

For now, well, like many posters above I have all the pieces except the rare ones. In the online game I have won about 100 coke rewards points and several hours of wifi time, and I have (big surprise) acquired every property except the rare ones there too. I have also noticed that more than once the dice appeared to have changed their roll to keep me from landing on the desired winning space, however I cannot prove it, and with the way the game tracks the history of where you landed, what you rolled and the outcome, you'd have to video tape yourself playing the game to prove the dice magically changed their roll to keep you from winning.

The online game does say at someone posted, that you must play at the winning time, which is random, but related to their high traffic patterns of use. I have played at all different times of day and did not notice that I won my rewards points or wifi at a certain time more than other times.

As for not being able to login or having pieces stolen by the game freezing- I think the game only froze on my once, and I was able to enter the game piece again after I closed the page and went back to the site.

To the folks who posted saying they have the Boardwalk Monopoly Game Piece, it's more likely you think you have it and you actually have Park Place, in the event you are not mistaken, congrats to you!!!

If you are going to buy McDonalds just to play, the breakfast hash browns, at least where I live, are the cheapest item you can buy that has the actual pieces with it.

Good Luck to all, and especially to me =)

Yeah, I have the same problem.
This is my first year playing McDonald's
Monopoly game and I've been hooked since
the very first game piece. My brother and
I have managed to collect all the game pieces
except the rare ones above and decided to
split any prize 50/50. We pathetically keep
all our games pieces in a zip lock baggy.
We've pretty much given up by now, but any
time we get to eat out, mcdonald's is our
only choice. Ahh..I can picture the winning
moment over and over in my head. Casually
ripping a game piece and to my surprise
winning and screaming at the top of my lungs.
It's quite pathetic but completely addicting.
What a smart marketing technique for MCD'S.

It's both amusing and sad to read the gripes about this "game". McDonald's is in the business of providing a food product for a segment of the population at a popular price and with free choice everybody wins. You might prefer something else most of the time. (Some currently popular politician's wives insist on lobster for a snack unlike us peasants.) When you prefer something else, there are other choices. Viva la free choice!
The "game" is only a method of hopefully increasing revenue for McD by increasing business and providing amusement for no additional cost to the customers. Educated customers know that there is no free lunch and any of the winnings are a bonus and thus must be rare. If you are there to gamble, spend an extra dollar for a lottery ticket. (for each $1 ticket, about 20 cents goes to prizes. Sweet! right? Look it up!) Otherwise just buy what you would normally want and save your sanity and waistline and your money.
Nobody in their right mind would buy something they don't want for the next to nothing chance of getting something for nothing.
Unfortunately that is way too common and keeps casino and lottery players poor and stupid and likewise permits politicians to buy the idiots votes by giving them a very few of the dollars from the booty they steal by taxing the "rich." The dirty little secret these politicians don't want you to know is that when taxes are high, the economy slows and tax revenue drops and EVERY body suffers, even those on welfare. Then the political class get power and $$
Study the great depression of '29. Recovery was happening by '31 when the "rich" (those making over &100,000/ year) were heavily taxed to make voters feel better and the economy tanked and everybody, especially those making less than that, suffered a great deal for 10 years. This was the worst depression in this country and lasted until WWII.
It can happen again. The crying over this "game" shows that many have a mindset that will permit this to happen again.
Inform yourself and vote. If you vote your greed, everybody loses.

Thats not counting all the ones people have asked me if i've needed, or i've already thrown out, and the 2 people i was going to split with, have nearly 3-4 times as many as me and we all need the same exact ones. This game i think is seriously bullshit, we've hit up at least 8-10 different mcdonalds in our area for these. O well tho, its a risk, does anyone know tho, if the pieces cross years?

Does anybody know why McDonald's site is unavailable. I have not been able to access their web site for 4 or 5 days now and the game doesn't officially end until Nov. 3rd.
