Feeling Stuck? 100 Ways to Change Your Life

ShareThis

You've got 20 minutes to change your life in 100 ways. Go.

This is the premise of an exercise I tried once, when I was feeling stuck in life. I wasn't sure what was amiss, but the routine I had fallen into was not satisfying the inner voice in me that insisted there was something else out there for me. (See also: Change Your Life With Storytelling)

After trying (forcefully) to understand what was going on, reading self-help books, filling out aptitude tests, and working with business and life coaches, I was given a suggestion that became a catalyst for some pretty big personal changes.

Here is how you can change your life in 20 minutes, step by step:

  1. Clear all distractions. Turn off the phone, the TV, the computer. Lock your door, and go to a quiet place.

  2. Sit down comfortably at a desk or table, with a blank piece of paper and a pen in front of you.

  3. Set a timer for 20 minutes.

  4. Go. Write down 100 things you want to do. Or careers you want to have. Or people you would like to meet. The sky is the limit.

  5. Don't be realistic. Dream big. Write down the craziest things you can think of, as well as the things that you don't even think bear mentioning because they are so simple. Write it all down.

  6. Work quickly. 20 minutes isn't very long, and you have 100 items to get through, if you can. Don't think about whether or not to write down an idea — just write. Write everything that comes to mind, even if it doesn't make sense. Just keep on writing, and don't stop until that timer goes off.

Something happens after about 10 or 15 minutes if you employ the exercise to its full potential. You stop caring about what specifically the ideas are, and you start to release an inner creativity that may have been locked away for a while. In an effort to get through 100 things in 20 minutes, you start to write outlandish things down that you aren't even really sure you want, but that are ideas that came to you nonetheless.

Ding! The timer goes off. No matter where you are in the process, or how many items you have written down, stop. (OK, if you are really on a roll and have a few more to write down because the juices are flowing, keep going. I won't tell.)

Leave the list alone for a day. Try not to look at it, and certainly don't revise it in any way. The following day, sit down and look at your list. How many of the items on it are feasible? Can you see your way to accomplishing any of it? Did anything come out of the list that you hadn't actually really thought of until you wrote it down in a hurried attempt to get to 100 items in the time limit? Any surprises in there?

The point of this exercise is not to create a giant and outlandish "to-do" list that never gets ticked off. Instead, it is simply to open up your mind to the idea that anything is possible, and to give you ideas that will help you to become unstuck in life.

Personally, after feeling stuck and making out my list, I identified a few ways to make positive changes in my life at the time; I joined Toastmasters because an item I wrote down was to become a public speaker. I also eventually started a blog to satisfy an inner wordsmith in me that has blossomed into a career. And ultimately, the list helped lead me to the decision to sell off everything I owned to live out my dreams of travel and adventure now.

And it all started with 20 minutes and 100 ways to change my life.

I think this is a great idea. I am at a stage in my life where I had a five year period of 'bad luck' and a negative attitude because of it. Finding it difficult to trust people etc.

In the past year, my luck has changed a lot. More to the point, my attitude has changed. Most people would think that was it...problem solved. But I found it so hard to adapt to life being nice and happy, which sounds bizarre I know.

So it's 2010, a new year. I've met a nice guy, I'm living in a nice area, I know what I want to do in life - using my life experiences to help other people and I'm 21 with my life ahead of me....but I'm scared of change and I needed tips of how to 'change my life' in a non-threatening, positive way.

Do you know what?....This is it. Just what you've mentioned in your article. it's the perfect place to start! Thanks.

I have just completed yr exercise and i found that it was all about me and my inner feeling towards myself! I knew i was troubled but never realised how much! Great exercise because now i feel more positive and now realise what i have to do to make myself stay that way. It feels as if im in constant mourning, and know i know that you cant change the past but you can change the future.
Thank you for opening up my inner feelings

and good luck to everyone X

Mr. Tarboush

i respect this method otherwise i prefer to try my one's by bringing three blank sheets of paper and name every paper the 1st one (realistic ambitions) then write in this paper your near dreams which you can accomplish soon, the 2nd one (far ambitions) next write on this paper what you want to achieve before your death (notice: write every thing don't fear any thing), the 3rd one which must include your (fabulous dreams) i am sure that you know what you must write here from the title.
after finish writing your brain will be clear to think but with more organized.

i'm 19 years old, suffer from pretty bad depression, and i just want to say thank you for writing this. i've been feeling stuck for a while now, held back by some things and some emotions i've been having a hard time letting go of. i just made my list, and i'm already feeling better. it was SO much harder than I had expected and I could even finish in 20 minutes, but i like the idea of an unfinished list. the activity made me realize just how much i have to look forward to, and how insignificant the little upsets that i'm experiencing right now are. thank you :)

Thanks for sharing this great, quick life-line for those times when I just can't seem to get un-stuck.
I just finished up a week where I was wallowing in my S&%T, and I really could have used this tool. Instead, I relied on a few support methods I've gathered around myself over the past few years, and they helped me pull myself up and out.
And, I too, wrote a blogpost about it.

I stumbled on your article, I'm not even sure how-- I guess it's the universe at work again :-)

I will add this great new trick to my "toolkit" for sure. I'm a creativity coach, so my clients will really appreciate this too!

It sounds like you may have picked this up from somewhere, or can I credit it to you? I always like to acknowledge those who have come before...

Wishing you well-

@Nanette - congratulations on being our 100th commenter for this article! (smiles)

As for crediting this idea, it was suggested by a coach I worked with years ago. I don't know where she got the idea from either...I think it was an incantation of something she learned via the grapevine. So I can't take credit for the originality of it, but then again neither can I assign it!

Guest's picture

This is a great strategy to get the creative energy flowing. Getting unstuck is all about movement and this is a simple exercise that moves both the hand and the imagination. I'm a big believer that change - including getting unstuck - just needs a small step to begin to create momentum. Too often we stay stuck because we think about the size of the hill to climb rather than focusing on one step at a time. Small steps taken consistently create change. That's my mantra!

Guest's picture
Guest

sorry, but this really is no good. I have tried to change my life to make it something happy but it still isn't. What I really wanted is what I really can't find. I've tried new hobbies, I'm active in lots of things, I have a decent job but what I really want is the security of a family, but that is the one thing I can't find. I am a failure and I wish I had never been born.

There has got to be more to life then shootin pills! thanks for this article!

Guest's picture

I think it's a great idea for someone who is young and up-in-coming in life, such as myself, as it helps them gain some perspective of their life and what they want to achieve.

My only worries with this exercise was that possible people who are much older write this list, I guess you would need to be in a certain frame of mind, would realise all the things they haven't/cannot do and that would upset them.

I hope they will realise that there will be much left on their list that they can do and they should get moving.

Ha, I worry too much. Guess I should add 'Worry less' to my list.

Great exercise though. Thanks for making that 20 minutes worth it.

Im 22. i was feeling "stuck" still feel stuck", ...addiced to painkillers..disapointed with where i am in life right now..

decided to write myself a letter from another persons aspect of my goals in life or for at least right now..(i heard somewhere about just starting to write and write and eventually you dont think about what your writing, your just thinking on paper)  i wrote 3 pages..rambling on about whatever popped up in my head.. it started with the "you have to..." "you need to stop..." but just flow with whatever came up.. now that i reread it. somewhere in the middle i stopped saying saying you, and used "I" instead...... it was a good way for me to prioritize what i wanted in life right now

Ive never participated to an open discussion as such.  I am 25, fired from my security job about 8 months ago. Now i just feel stuck. I'm overwhelm and stuck, all I can do is cry. Ive read some of this thread, and feel that I may have a little glimpse of hope of figuring things out. Don't know really where to start since everything requires money... But I don't feel alone, this might sound selfish and I'm sorry, but it just makes me feel that I might come out of this since other people have...

@nora, you seem like an amazing person, it be wonderful to meet people like yourself. Good luck everyone!!

Mid-Life crisis anyone?Ok so I have another possible solution to finding out how to unstuck yourself ok...Now seriously close your eyes...Dont visualize anything just close your eyes and look into the deep abyss that makes up the darkness when you close your eyes. When you reach the end (f you have an end,so ppl never reach it)(enlightenment)of this darkness you will find what is the purpose of your life.10 minutes a day whatever time .It has to be a serene and humbly area so you can relax and do your business.
ThankYou

I appreciate your practical approach to this subject, and there is not doubt regarding the dearth of helpful resources available to help people find meaning, purpose, and passion in their lives. However, while there are many exceptions, finding one’s life purpose is seldom a 20 minute exercise. Of course, people want 20 minute answers to serious questions, and I do think your exercise is useful, but it’s just a starting point to a really complex, intriguing, and extraordinarily rewarding topic.

Okay. So this is something I can do... I am a stay at home mom, something I never planed on doing. There are so many things that I have wanted to do for my self, but I feel kinda held back. What do you do after you make this list? Try to make them possible? Just feel like I have no time for anything but cleaning my house and feeding my kid and Maybee soonto be husband of 6 years. I am so stuck in a rut.. Feelin depressed. Need inspiration.?

You should find the joy and magic of raising your child, find living in their world a joy...discover that the small and little things of joy can create pure happiness within yourself. Don't look at it as something holding you back, look at it as something pushing you forward and making you a stronger person. Mom's are understated, but I thank you for being a mom for I am just a child of a mom just like you are, and I respect all their hard work to create us, a new creation in the world.. Be thankful for what you have, not what you don't...that is where you should begin. And who said you still can't do things while having a child ? Find creativity the best way you can, and look at the positive, you will find life really isn't that bad.

Really, it is all about your perpective, and you should get there :)

When I want to change or improve something in my life, I take a short break and start to determine my existing principles. Then, I improve them to improve my life. Principles make our attitudes, attitudes make our skills.

Guest's picture

ok. I put down 89 things ....I guess I'm
someone who pretends not to need anybody, since most of them have to do with helping others, giving money to needy, etc. I always say "i'm happier by myself", due to experiences, but seeing the list says Ireally miss people around. hmmmm maybe i'll tiptoe into a club, crowd or join something and see what happens. I'd hate to end up in some rocking chair and no one know i'm dead for 3 weeks.

I haven't tried this exercise yet but your comment got to me. My inability to love myself makes me dread being with people and try way too hard to please people. It keeps me from having a job even though I have a Masters degree. Thankfully I have a great husband that respects my mental health issues. I care for my 2 young children and teenaged foster child now so I am never away from people. I fear very much what will happen in 3 years when all of my children are in school all day and have social lives that don't always involve me. I fear I will be very lonely. Maybe I should join something or slip into the back of some club. Maybe I should try to open my life up like you. Maybe I would lfind that I miss people too. Thanks for the comment, might have helped me more than the exercise!

Ive done this before in the past. I can come up with all kinds of things I want in my life, I can dream it up all day but if I have no clue how to succeed with these things what good is it going to do for me? Not knowing what I want isnt the problem. It's finding a way, knowing where to start.

Nora Dunn's picture
Nora Dunn

@Daisy - Agreed: it's all in the execution. But sometimes we don't need to know exactly how to achieve something; instead we need to start by setting our intentions. The world works in mysterious ways; here's one way I managed to make this exercise work for me without any initial conception of how I'd accomplish what I wanted to do: http://www.wisebread.com/vision-boards-dream-big-play-with-pictures-and-...

Nora Dunn:
Are you a LMHC or psychiatrist?
Those 'brainstorming bucket lists' are not a new idea.
They are included in just about every self help
book
"How to get what you Really Want!" by Jane Smith or Joe Jones!

And they are largely useless. Most people
don't have a clue what they really want.
And 'sitting in a quiet room' with a pencil, as you suggest,
is NOT going to fix three decades of inertia.

d

Nora Dunn's picture
Nora Dunn

@d - No this idea isn't new, and I never claimed it to be. But given the few hundred comments here that suggest it might be a good idea, I'm not so sure it's entirely useless. It's up to the individual to make changes in their lives, and sometimes a tool like this can be the tipping point. It certainly helped me, and all I'm doing is writing from experience - and the heart.

I wasn't sure if I had to get to 100, since I didn't read the rest of the blog! I will add 'read all of directions before hand' to my list! I did get to 69 items, and if I hadn't purposefully omitted school related items, I would have probably gotten all the way to 100!

Guest's picture

Thanks for being positive and sharing this information. I'll give it a try and try to make it work. I'm tired of making excuses and looking for sympathy. I used to think everyone else needed to change but now I realize its me. I served some time in jail and that really opened up my eyes. I spent the 1st 4 days in solitary confinement. I did a lot of thinking in jail and I truly repent the way I had been living my life. At first I was so angry at the people who had me arrested but I realized had I not been high on drugs I would never have been there in the first place. I had so much anger built up inside of me for years. When I lost my freedom and I had no clue when I was going to be released. I've never felt so alone: it changed something in me. I still have nightmares about the experience but I know my life is headed in a much more positive direction now. Its not just a fear of being locked up for me; it is that I realize I hurt people and I want to be a better person and I feel I deserve a better life. I know I'm rambling; had to let that out. Thanks

Do you ever think it is too late or that your too old to persue your dreams??

Guest's picture

No Way! Some of the most amazing things have been done by people in their later years. Maybe it is because they have more life perspective and more time. Just open your heart and live from the inside out. If you have 2 day, 2 years, 20 years, doesn't matter. You only got one go at life so LIVE IT NOW!!!!

My therapist oh so long ago suggested to make a shield from cardboard and then go through magazines and choose pictures of how I would like to feel. Things that inspire. Things that I love. This is a great post! I agree with the idea of doing simple things for a couple of minutes just to unwhine yourself and meditate about what's happening in your life and what you really want out of it. Because sometimes when we get so stressed out every day of our lives by work, relationship problems, personal dilemmas, we find it so difficult to reach out again to our comfort zone. This gives a great advice to a lot of people out there!

Guest's picture
Millie

Thank you so much for this! It was great, I really enjoyed it and suddenly feel inspired, excited and ready to have fun again - no longer feeling stuck! THANK YOU!

Guest's picture

Really great post. I did the list-thing myself. And It's so liberating, just that feeling that there is more to life than feeling stuck and unsatisfied. I also made a blog about it, something I would recommend everyone who wants to put their thoughts about changing in words. Your dreams of travel sound amazing and I bet you never thought before you made that list, that you would ever pursue them.
You are an inspiration!

Guest's picture

These are some great life changing suggestions! Most people want to change their life (for the better) but always hit a wall when they come right up to the decision point. Some don't change until its a life or death situation - which is sad. The first steps in this article are key: taking a time out. Change does not come to your life until you decide you want it but unfortunately many distractions hinder the change we want. So this is key you have to decide you want change - you have to decide you want to change your life!

Thank you so much, Nora!

I've been struggling with depression, social anxiety, body dysmorphic disorder and many other things for 12 years now (and I'm only in my twenties). I've had over 48 suicide attempts and doing this list has made me realize how much I forbade myself to be happy to punish myself for things that were done to me. I managed to come up with 124 things in my list and realizing what trivial things would make me happy, which I didn't allow myself to do was really an eye-opener. I cannot thank you enough and don't mind some of the unintelligent and negative comments, they're just too damn comfortable and "clever" feeling miserable.

Greetings and much love* from Germany!! xx

I did the list and after doing it I read your final line: "Selling everything I own to to live out my dreams of travel and adventure now." that's just what I have been contemplating lately... It's hard though, to let go of my house, my career and my little Maltese island to travel to continents like Australia, South America etc. I want to experience the big world yet I need to let go of my small world to leap into the bigger one. This ordinary Maltese life is not enough.. Next thing I'll end up marrying and having kids to be like my friends, to fit in..... So your idea helped me delve into those dark corners of my mind and I hope I will get there someday.
Thanks

This is so wonderful to hear. May I ask, what changes have you made to your life since you did this list (1999) ? I need help badly and appreciate any advice you can give me.
I am 50 and have never really lived.
Thank you very much.

Continued success and happiness to you!

I got to this page by googling "what to do with my life!".... I'm turning thirty next month, and I guess I'm in a mid-life crisis. I tried this immediately as soon as I finished reading! My list went up to 50 (with 10 minutes extension) :) and it did open up some ideas I didn't even realize I wanna do! Thanks so much!

Even if you fulffilled "all" the dreams you wrote down....you'd still be the same person you were before you wrote "anything" down to begin with! : )) Welcome to the wonderful world of Humanism Folks!! Be a better "you"....which involves "losing" who you really are to get a new matrix version of yourself. Sorry, I already like who I am, and don't need to do this. Just "liking" who you are is a whole lot easier....and alot less dramatic!!! LOL!!! Brian

Hello. My visitors have been asking about this, do you mind if I re-print this on my site? I will of course give full credit to this site, and I will link to you if you would like me to. Thanks.

This is an excellent idea and one I wish I could add to my new book 'How To Change Your Life One Day At A Time. - I'm editing right now and I could shoehorn this in, with a link to your blog of course. Let me know. Stu :)
