Reputation: | Does anyone have the code to automatically ad a button for Digg, Stumble and Delicious to the bottom of the posts on their blog? I've found big bulky Digg buttons, but I'd really like something more delicate. I like the way this blog: http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/ has it. I appreciate any advice! I've searched around the internet but still can't find what I'm looking for. |

If you're serious about your blogging, I highly recommend changing over to a WordPress blog hosted on your own domain. That way you get more control and options. It's best to do it as early as possible to prevent major headaches with getting all your readers to move with you when you've built up a large readership. There are many plugins for doing many things with Wordpress. For social bookmarking, I use the Sociable plugin which puts a nice little row of buttons at the bottom of each post. You can see it at work on my blog: Our Fourpence Worth Good luck!

Reputation: | Hmm. I've seen a lot of other Bloggers on Wordpress, but I really worry that I'll lose readers during the switch. I like the Blogger posting interface a lot. It's hard to make that kind of switch. Is it really that superior? |

Reputation: | I use Wordpress for my personal blog and am working on switching my finance blog over as well. I can't speak for the free Wordpress site, but, like Hermione, would definitely recommend using a Wordpress site hosted on your own domain. It will cost a bit of money, which might not be do-able for you right now (personally, I waited until the blog was able to pay for itself through ads). But there's a lot of added freedom that you don't get with Blogger. That said, I've been happy with Blogger, and for a free site, I can't complain.

Reputation: | Rose, I don't think you necessarily need to switch to Wordpress. WP has some advantages over blogspot -- eg., plugins that add more functionality -- but is not a requirement for blogging on your own domain. Of course, a self-hosted WP has disadvantages over blogspot as well. Namely, you have to manage the technical side of it yourself. It's not too hard, but it's certainly not easy as a "plug-n-play" platform like blogspot.com or wordpress.com. So I don't think you need to seriously consider switching to WP at this point. Especially if blogspot is providing a nice blogging platform for you. However, if you plan to write the blog "professionally" (try to earn some cash via ads or whatever), it is better to have your site at your own domain name. That is, distilledrose.com is better than distilledrose.blogspot.com. But (and here's the problematic part), by the time bloggers realize they want to be on their own domain, they've already accumulated a ton of high quality inbound links to their blogspot.com domain. And, this is key, the value derived from those links do not transfer to your new domain. So the dilemma bloggers run into 3-6 months after they start blogging is: Should they continue to blog on myblogname.blogspot.com, which has a lot of high value inbound links but an "unprofessional" domain name.... or switch to myblogname.com and feel proud about having space to call their own, but at the cost of losing half their subscribers and/or readers. That's why I recommend my new blogging friends just start out with their own unique domain name. It's cheap (< $10/year), it gives you a domain to call your own -- which you can use for both a website and email addresses -- and it saves a lot of hassle down the road. If you already have a website as a sub-domain at blogspot.com or wordpress.com, I encourage you to publish to your own domain as soon as it's feasible. Before you get huge and are stuck with myblogname.blogspot.com forever. BTW, blogspot allows you to continue to use the blogspot posting interface, while publishing on your own domain. So you can keep using blogspot and have your own domain name. Here's the help page for it: http://help.blogger.com/bin/answer.py?answer=55373 Hope this helps! Greg |
