Default Best HTML Editor

For those of you who are webmasters, what's the best HTML editor in your opinions? I use Notepad to code my sites but I would like to have a simple easy and user-friendly editor that doesn't take five minutes to load on my computer upon opening and doesn't bog down my system resources so I can sorta have a WYSIWYG editor so I don't have to hand code some simple stuff like bold, italics, underline, etc.

Thanks in advance.

I sometimes use SeaMonkey web composer, which has an okay WYSIWYG HTML editor. It's part of the SeaMonkey internet suite which comes with browser (sort of like Netscape), composer, chat, email & news stuff. You can install them all or just composer. It's developed by Mozilla and you can download it from their website. I also find the SeaMonkey browser faster than Firefox.

I normally just use Notepad and an HTML previewer at www.draac.com to check the important formatting (it doesn't always render 100% of the code properly) such as bold, italic, etc.

I'll have to check out Seamonkey. My exerience with wysiwyg editors is that they create messy html, but maybe that's not the case anymore?

Anyhow, I'm a fan of using Aptana. You can edit the source in one tab, and immediately check your results in a firefox and ie tab. Not exactly lightweight, but it works when I'm prototyping stuff. If I'm going minimalist, I prefer using Notepad2 or Notepad++ so I at least get some syntax highlighting in the html.

I use Vim for nearly all text-editing purposes. However, the only way it helps in HTML editing is you can get or write Vim macros to assist with HTML tags. Aside from that, I also have some experience with Dreamweaver and nvu but I don't use those software packages.

These days though, you may not necessarily need a HTML editor at all. You can find lots of free CSS templates on the web and some of the better-known blog software packages come with ready-made designs and rich text editors.

Yes, I think they do create messy html sometimes. I don't use it much anymore (I used to use it mainly for making eBay listings, but I quit selling on eBay a few months ago and haven't used it since). I've been using notepad a lot more too. Or just directly editing the html in my admin control panels for Zen Cart and Wordpress.

I downloaded HTMLKit and it was pretty good. I know I didn't exploit all of the features. I got the free version.

Hmm... I use PSPad. It's free and very useful. I've never comeback to using commercial editors ever since I've used it.

I'm sticking with Notepad.

And WordPress

But if I had to choose one, it'd be Notepad.

...sorry, that's just how I feel about WYSIWYG
