Exclamation Domain name registrations

Perhaps you're about to start a new blog or other site, and are coming up with domain names. This may interest you.

In case you haven't read this already, here's a warning about looking for domain name availability.

Network Solutions steals domain ideas; Confirmed!

Quote:
I am confirming that Network Solutions steals domain ideas when people check domain availability on the Network Solutions website. They seem to have started the practice of stealing domain ideas on December 16th 2007 according to our Domain History database but I was just made aware of this practice today.
And this isn't new. Many registrars have been doing this for years. Just ask any porn webmaster.

I love how NS made it sound like they were holding the domain name for the sake of their customers. Yeah. Right.

I like the vigilante justice of Reddit.

Yuck! How low is that?

Meanwhile, regular domain thieves have been doing that for years. They just monitor the searches through registrars, and then snap up the domains if you don't register them, but it can usually take days instead of seconds.

Yup, and here's a very successful one: http://money.cnn.com/magazines/busin.../01/100050989/

So the lesson? Don't waffle when you find a great domain! Buy it now!

This is also how one collects dozens of unused but super-clever domain names.

Ugghh...I found out the hard way...I will see what happens in a few days. I wasn't really tied to the name, but still, it is annoying.

I've registered 2 domain names with GoDaddy and didn't have any problems. The first one I registered with them, I did the search one day and went back to register it one or two days later and it was still available. Of course it wasn't a super hot or cool domain name - it was between mozartini.net or mozartinishop.com and I don't imagine anyone else would have been clamoring to get it before us.

I've never heard any complaints about godaddy doing this, but I normally find most of the ideas I have are already taken anyway

Namecheap has done this before to me. That's why when I think of a domain name and it's available I normally move on it within an hour. $9.29 each, I spend that at the bar in a few minutes. (Frugalist don't yell at me!) I know I should BYOL (Bring my own liquor). :-)
