I'd definitely be interested in guest posting on your site and swapping articles. I live in LA and write about personal finance, saving money, and saving to purchase a house. Maybe we could select a topic that would be relevant to both LA and NYC. Let me know-

Google Adwords is expensive, but you can see instant results and so it all depends on how much money you are willing to risk? Concentrating on organic traffic from the SERPS is always the best thing to do. Many people seem to achieve good results through article submission sites as well.

I looked at your site and blog, and I think something you should look into is redesigning them both. While marketing is important, visitors won't come back to your site or link to it if it's hard to tell what's going on or if it looks amateur. The main page of your website isn't rendering properly on my browser (firefox 3.5), with a lot of text overlapping each other and some elements of the page look a little off. Also both sites are really "busy" in the sense it's hard to tell what you should be looking at. There's a lot of wigets and distracting things in the sidebars, and there's no coherent color pallet. Try to stick with just 2 or 3 main colors max - putting a lot of different colors in the page makes it appear a lot busier. Also, a lot of the graphics on the pages are pixellated and need to be anti-aliased. Don't be afraid to have white-space on your site too. White-space can be used to make your site appear more organized and streamlined if used correctly. Look around online for sites you think look appealing and take design cues from them (Wisebread is well-designed IMO).

My experience from Google Adwords is that it gives you a lot of traffic that leaves your website pretty fast or immediately. Concentrate on good content!

I think adwords is a great method in getting instant traffic at the beginning if you could use your keywords tactically and write your ads attractively.
