Default How to get the most traffic from Stumble Upon?

I'm sort of confused as to how best utizilize SU as a blogger. Do you just submit your post to SU and hope for the best, or is there a way to increase your traffic?

Thanks!

I found that it works best when someone with a lot of friends submits your post. If you submit it yourself it might give you some hits the first time, but if you do it more it loses its effectiveness

I've been toying with this a bit too. So far, I figure you have to have a lot of "fans," people subscribed to your review pages. Your fans will look at the pages you submit and then hopefully will give them a thumbs up and create a chain effect from there.

The best way I've found to build up fans is to simply go out and find interesting pages to review. The more content you have on your Stumble blog page, the better. Also, I think it's better to "discover" the page, meaning you were the first one to find it, because then your name will allows appear associated with that page.

Send me your email address and I'll add you!

I have to question the "quality" of StumbleUpon visitors. I was stumbled a few times last month, and received thousands of hits over the course of a day or two. When I went back to review my logs, it showed that most visitors only stayed on my site for a matter of seconds. Which means that they didn't stop to read the article.

So while your hit counter will shoot up, you won't be getting many meaningful readers.

I've had the same experience. Also, whenever I "stumble" (maybe about once or twice a year), I only hang around and actually check out 1 out of 15-20 sites and never for long. I don't think I have ever gone back to a site I had stumbled before.

SU is really like channel surfing and finding unique types of websites that have cool interactive things like games, flashy audio-visual stuff, etc. to kill some time when you're bored. Well, for me anyway.

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

LPKitten, I'm sending you my email now

Anyone interested in setting up a Wisebread SU friends network? Maybe we can promote each other's articles?

I got over 600 visits from StumbleUpon the other day... I guess someone really liked one of my credit articles!

I just looked into Stumble the other day. Some tips gleaned from surfing:

* Install the toolbar and use it often. If you're rushed, just vote "I like it!" and move on. If you have more time, tag it, then review it. One sentence reviews are great - fast to write, fast to read/skim.

* Fill out your profile. Empty profiles don't attract friends or supporters.

* You get bonus credit for discovering URLs others have not submitted yet, and which get votes from other stumblers.

* Stumble valuable, interesting content, including great forum threads.

* Look at who's stumbled URLs in your area(s) of interest and add them as friends. Sometimes, they'll add you as a friend as well.

* Check out the photo stumbling option. It can add a lot of impact to your stumble feed.

* Speaking of which, be sure to add stumble feeds/widgets to your site to display what you've stumbled lately. Being a quality filter has huge value to your audience.

* Avoid putting the stumble link on every one of your articles. Place it strategically on your best articles, or content most likely to get stumbled by others. Don't forget about photos as content others might find worth voting on.

* Be sincere. If you're going to join a community, be honest and sincere in your desire to be part of it. Gaming social networking sites doesn't pay off in the long run, and you'll make more friends by being a valuable, ongoing member.

Those are the tips I remember, and I have probably missed a few. I look forward to others' tips and ideas!
