Could someone explain in really extraordinarily basic terms how these social networking sites work? I know that this is an area that I need more education.

Thanks for all your help! I'm pretty clueless on this topic.

They're sites that you can add yours or other people's blog posts to. Some of the have a voting system. They're a pretty good way to get traffic if you can find the right one for your blog. What works for one, will not work for another. Try out a few and track the results.

A very popular social bookmarking site if you want to try one out is Stumble Upon. I read somewhere that Stumble Upon is one of the best traffic drivers to blogs and websites. Here's an article about StumbleUpon's Fantastic Ability to Drive Traffic.

I myself have the Stumble Upon toolbar and once in a while when I have a rare few minutes with nothing else to do, I stumble around for fun. It's sort of like channel surfing. You click the "stumble" button and it pulls up a random page that some other person has recommended. It's quite fun and you discover some really neat sites that you otherwise would never have found.
