Default Why did you start a personal finance blog?

I might be a bit biased, but I think people who start personal finance blogs are amazing. It takes a lot of chutzpah to talk about your own money problems and offer advice for the kindly strangers who comes to your blog.

I would love to know how everyone got started and what keeps you writing great content every single day.

I started blogging as a way to keep myself accountable. I was/ really struggling with my budget and writing was a way of committing myself to a plan of action. Not to mention that I think my friends were all sick, sick, sick of me talking about my finances!

It was a combination of things. I do the finances for our family, and wanted to share ideas back and forth.... My spouse was working a lot of extra hours, and I needed something interesting to do... I also have a passion for improving the environment and ethical business and politics... so that all gets included as well... I'm an introvert, so the blog is a great way for me to communicate...

I found myself reading a lot of blogs and posting a lot of long winded comments. At that point, I realized that maybe I did have something useful to say and decided to start one myself. It is a good way to stay accountable, though I don't post numbers on my blog, only percentage net worth changes. But that's something, right?

Funnily enough, it was joining the Wisebread forum that gave me the idea to start my blog, Our Fourpence Worth (in Feb 2008). Like Megan, I found myself posting long-winded comments about frugal living and saw that a lot of other members here had frugal living/pf blogs and thought we - my sister and I - should give it a try because we've had to improvise a lot in the past 5 years in the interest of frugal living and thought we'd have a lot to ideas to share. I had been thinking about starting a blog for several months, so I finally did.

Default It's fun to talk about

I started writing about personal finance (http://www.moneytoliveblog.com) because I like talking about personal finance. Since it is not always socially acceptable to talk about money, I write about it.

My immediate family and best friend do not care too much about money. While they pay attention enough to have retirement accounts and to get a reasonable deal when buying a car or a house, no one wants to talk to me every day about money.

Online, I can reach out to other people who are interested in talking about finances on a regular basis.

Smile Why not start one?

Earlier this year I was reading statistics about women and their finances and was amazed at how much we trail behind men in terms of our knowledge about even the simplest of financial matters, such as buying and selling a home, maintaining a budget, paying taxes, setting aside a retirement account, etc. It inspired me to start writing about personal finance for women, and to make reading about money *fun* and not stuffy, like many financial sites that are out there. My writing for the blog is less about me and my life per se, and more a witty guide for women to rely on themselves when it comes to financial matters. After my first post, I was hooked! :P

Strangely enough, I came in from a different angle. I wanted to learn more about the internet and its communities. I wanted to pick up on new web technologies and wanted to know what the fuss was about with blogging. I had 2 close friends who blogged so I wanted to see what it was all about!

It so happened that my hobby was personal finance and so I figured I'd just write about that and see where it would go!

I start a personal finance blog as to share my knowledge about finance and learn from my wisdom. It is also the way of promoting our product and service.
