Post Free Software Listing

I am a big supporter of free software and just wanted to share some of the free software I use daily and would like others to share some free software they use.

OpenOffice - www.openoffice.org - equivalent to MS Office

filezilla - http://filezilla-project.org/download.php - FTP Client

Cute PDF - www.cutepdf.com - PDF Generator

Thuderbird - http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ - email client

Again, these are just the ones I use everyday, please share any that you believe will be useful to the community.

I can vouch for OpenOffice, Filezilla, and Thunderbird on PC. I'm sure I have a bunch of others but my PC has been down for a couple months and I barely remember what's on it!

For all the Mac Users out there, I went through all my programs on my mac and found a lot of free ones that are useful to have around:

NeoOffice: http://www.neooffice.org/neojava/en/index.php
OpenOffice for Mac tends to be pretty buggy, but NeoOffice works like a dream!

Cyberduck ftp client: http://cyberduck.ch/

TextWrangler text editor: http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/
if you code HTML or anything else web-related, this is WAY better because it color-codes your text much like Dreamweaver would

VLC Media Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
plays video formats that quicktime may not, also available for PC

Transmission for LEGAL =) torrent downloads: http://www.transmissionbt.com/

Growl for system notifications: http://growl.info/

Quicksilver keystroke launcher: http://www.blacktree.com/

Paintbrush for MS Paint type fun: http://paintbrush.en.softonic.com/mac

Solitaire XL: http://www.lavacat.com/

ImageWell for quick image edits: http://xtralean.com/IWOverview.html

Stuffit Expander (http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffitexpander/index.html) and UnRarx (http://www.unrarx.com/) for unzipping files

Two sites where you can search for freeware and shareware programs:
http://www.softpedia.com/
http://www.versiontracker.com

Phew! I hope you find something you like!

Seems like most of the software I use are freeware nowadays. Here are some of those:

Paint.NET: http://www.getpaint.net
Not as many features as Photoshop but for simple photo-editing, it does the job.

Pidgin: http://www.pidgin.im/
Open source Instant Messaging client. Supports most major IM protocols.

Servant Salamander: http://www.altap.cz/download.html#salrel
Only the older version 1.52 is freeware but it's still a pretty good lightweight file manager.

Vim: http://www.vim.org/
The text editor with a learning curve. However, I've been using vi/vim since my college days when I was primarily a UNIX user and it stuck.

Autohotkey: http://www.autohotkey.com/
A flexible utility for writing keyboard/mouse macros and for automating many things under Windows. This too comes with a learning curve if you're not a computer programmer.

Ditto: http://ditto-cp.sourceforge.net/
Clipboard manager. Saves items that you place on the clipboard for recall later. Also provides a quick way to search your clipboard history.

Pitaschio: http://pitaschio.ara3.net/
A rather weird utility. Tweaks some user interface elements in Windows.

Taskbar Shuffle: http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm
Rearranges buttons in your Windows taskbar. Optionally, it can also keep related items together.

PocketMod: http://pocketmod.com/
Prints out small folded notebooks. Only mentioning this here because they have a downloadable version of the software.

JkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/
Open source disk defragmenter.

The Guide: http://theguide.sourceforge.net/
Open source hierarchical notes database.

Nice list, rstlne... very tweak-a-licious.

If you're a mac person and are into a multi-protocol messenger program, check out Adium. It's SUPER customizable and integrates nicely with Growl (which I mentioned above) http://www.adiumx.com/

Here's some other that I use at work:

RealVNC - www.vnc.com RealVNC provides remote control software which lets you see and interact with desktop applications across any network.

PuTTY - www.putty.org PuTTY is a free implementation of Telnet and SSH for Win32 and Unix platforms

Ad-Adware - www.lavasoftusa.com - Adware removal

World Time Servier = http://www.worldtimeserver.com/atomic-clock/ sync's your computer time with the World Time Server atomic clock.

CCleaner - http://www.ccleaner.com/ - Love this program. It basically is a computer maid/butler. Cleans the registry, temp files, etc.

Default I have a really good one...

It's from Google, it's called Picasa. Its a photo editing and sharing utility that has many features for making your photos look better as well as sizing and more.

I wish it had a way to add a watermark or date and copyright to the photos, but other than that it works great!

Enjoy.
