I don't sign up for any of those coupon programs. I check out my grocery store flyers online and print coupons from there. Usually you can combine these with manufacturer coupons that you can get online too (from the manufacturer's website). I get really funny about grocery shopping. These are the steps I take to prevent waste and cut costs

1) View weekly flyer
2) Plan menu around special items
3) Write list of meals or recipes to be made over next 2 weeks and number meals
4) If using recipes for list, refer to page number and book of recipe
5) Write shopping list from ingredients in menu items, grouped according to dairy, veg/fruit, meat, canned goods, etc..
6) When writing ingredient down for shopping list, indicate recipe number that needs that item (for example: "enchilada sauce - 1,5,7" would mean I need enchilada sauce for meals 1, 5 and 7 on my list)
7) Scan list for items that pertain to only 1 recipe - this can represent waste if its a fresh fruit or vegetable and too many jars/bottles if its a sauce. These are the 'orphans'.
8) Try to incorporate orphan items into side dishes or other meals to make full use of groceries bought.

When I send my husband to the store, he doesn't understand why I go mental if he doesn't buy everything and loses my list (I spend about an hour on it). I don't care if he can't find everything, but I NEED to know what was bought and what wasn't! Sometimes I keep a copy for myself when I send him to the shop in case he loses the list. I like it if he crosses out the items he buys. That way I can quickly see (because of the numbers) which meals I have all the ingredients for and which ones I need to get a few things for still..

Total luxury for me - online grocery shopping. Hubby won't let me do it if he's home because he can save a few bucks at Aldi's. It only costs about $5 though and I usually find a coupon for free delivery anyways. We're in Chicago so I use Peapod and they let you sort their list of products by unit price so you can quickly get the cheapest one. I still use my list system when shopping online.

This keeps our family of six healthy, thin and well-fed for around $100 a week (eating the same amount of processed food we'd probably be a little pudgier and a lot less healthy - too much high fructose corn syrup in that stuff). We cook nearly everything from scratch and I make generous use of my Rival crockpot.

Good resource to get started - I use Centsible.net. Look at their grocery page for grocery flyers across the US. You don't need to sign up and its free, straight from the source. Just links to the grocery store you shop at.
