I've also been known to call around before we plan to eat out. When we travel, I try to identify towns where we might stop and restaurants that we're likely to choose. A few phone calls can help identify that a particular choice offers free or reduced kid's meals on the night we'll be in town.

I have also signed my kids up for many birthday clubs. We receive free meal coupons from Friendly's, Bob Evans, IHOP, and Boston Market. (And probably a few others I can't think of right now.) That certainly helps to defray the costs when we do eat out.

I love the Applebee's promotion for kids to eat free. Their food is reasonable so if you and your husband can go out and have your two kids eat free, it actually begins to be about the same price as cooking dinner.

I believe Dennys has kids eating free on Tuesday and saturdays and Damons has discounted rack ofribs for JULY 4th holiday weekend. Saving money and investing it made me financiall independent at 42. This website is a good start
