Default best buys -

both of the marshalls and tj maxx near me have GREAT bath and body sections - i often find sets from L'Occitane, Perlier, and Caldwell Massey - at ridiculously discounted prices. when I'm there, I'll often stock up on high-end candles and soaps for hostess gifts, as well as to be prepared for those "just because" girlfriend-in-a-crisis-emergency-gifts. . .after all a lovely candle, a nice bath gel, and some gourmet chocolate is often all it takes to buffer a friend through a bad fill-in-the-blank <breakup, day at work, fight with in-laws, etc> and so having a secret stash of girl-goods allows me be a thoughtful friend without breaking the bank.

on a more selfish note-i also love their 'on trend' items (sundresses in summer, sweaters in winter) -i would never spend a lot on a trend - and at these places you never have to. got a maxidress (floorlength sundress) this summer for $14 and have worn it all the time - and received many compliments. so much trendy summery goodness for under $20!

Shoes for sure, when I can find them in my size (11) - I normally resort to full-priced shoes at more expensive stores, but I'm always super happy to find an inexpensive cute pair! I love shoes

I love looking for exotic foodstuffs and teas at Marshall's. I recently got a yummy pomegranate tea there!

Default Dress clothes

I always get nice dress clothes at those stores. Many times it's the overpriced items that are at wierd size that make it to the discount retailers. Lucky for me and my 6'5" 205 lb frame that I can find dress clothes that are made for tall people without having to have a 42" waist!

The best deals I've found at stores like Marshalls and TJ Max have been on professional clothes for work. I've also gotten great deals on housewares and stuff for the kids!

I once got a very, very cute brand name pair of strappy dress heels at Marshalls' for $8. $8! I needed them for that night too, so my relief at finding them was even more intense than it would have been normally.

Marshalls = Necessity

I got my gf a great handbag at Ross. I've also scored things like throw pillows and pants.

At places like Costco or discounters, I tend to get the basics, like underwear, socks, and the like. Lately, I've gotten a lot of things from K-Mart. I know the big battle is between Wal-Mart and Target, but, they have decent men's office casual stuff for under $20. IMNSHO, they don't last as long as the mid-range Dockers brand, but they're around the same as the lower-end Dockers. For basic black, this doesn't matter, because you can dye the pants with Rit to get you through another half-year of wear. (On the flipside, the K-Mart Joe Boxer underwear is flimsy and fragile. I'll have to get it elsewhere. I remember that underwear used to last years - now I'm lucky if it lasts a year before fraying. I have to find a "Made in USA" source for my undies!)
