Default 20 Tip-Top Hot Tips

Any thoughts on these? Cooking Tips

1. If your salt is clumping up from humidity, put a few grains of rice in with it to adsorb excess moisture.
2. Freeze leftover wine or chicken broth in ice cube trays. You can use the cubes later when making soups or sauces.
3. Light a candle close to where you’re cutting onions to eliminate the tears.
4. When choosing pears, pick hard, unripe ones. Pears ripen from the inside out. By the time the outside is softening, the inside has gone by.

I honestly didn't know the one about not putting tomatoes in the fridge. I know you shouldn't put bread in the fridge. I love learning new stuff!

Another way to prevent tears with onions is to put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes just before you plan to use it.

I watch a lot of food network and they all say not to refrigerate your tomatoes... but realistically they just don't last as long if you leave them sitting out.

A tip not on the list is to use hairspray (not aerosol... the liquidy spritz kind) to remove pen markings from clothes. You spray it on, let it sit for a while, try to work the stain out, and then wash the item. I think it has to do with the alcohol content in the spray.

Holding a tea spoon in your mouth stops the onion tears too :0) Might look kinda funny but it works!

The tears from cutting onions are actually good for your eyes . I always put my tomatoes in the fridge, otherwise they don't last even 2 days.

Temperatures below 55F destroy some flavor molecules in tomatoes. That's probably only important knowledge for fresh tomatoes bought from a farmer's market though. Store bought tomatoes probably get shipped in refrigerated containers and taste insipid anyhow, so the refrigeration for those probably isn't as detrimental to their flavor.

I don't buy the burning a candle thing for cutting onions. Cutting onions releases sulfur containing compounds into the air. When those compound reach our eyes, they form (relatively dilute) sulfuric acid and cause that stinging sensation. Is the candle supposed to burn those compounds out of the air or something? Refrigerating your onions before use (slows down sulfur compounds getting released) or using a fan to blow the tear-inducing compounds away from you works.

I love the wine idea. I always have leftovers and an open bottle spoils so quickly.
