Kathryn, thanks for the suggestions. I hate to put a stove in our beautiful fireplace but it might be a good idea to make the downstairs more friendly in the winter.

Any other ideas other than space heaters to keep things warm?

I have had great success replacing regular curtains with thermals, or even with quilts. My Mom likes to hang heavy things behind her regular curtains during the winter.

Does anyone wonder why Amish, who shun modern technology, would invent an electric heater? I thought it was an advertising scam when I first saw it, especially all the photos.

Penny - I had the same thought. We live in Pennsylvania, near many Amish, and the whole thing just seems so incongruent.

A wood-burning insert might be a good compromise. Back when I was shopping for a wood-burning stove for our cabin, I saw a lot of them for sale on Craigslist and eBay at pretty good prices.

There's a piece on this in the Parade from this Sunday's paper. I would have thought it a scam if I hadn't heard about it here. Still sounds odd as none of the Amish should know enough about wiring to be able to make something like that....*shakes head*

Default Eden Pure heaters

I have bought both the Eden Pure Gen 1000 and the Eden Pure Gen 500. I placed the Gen 500 in the kitchen and the Gen 1000 in the den. I have my thermostat set of 60 degrees and the heaters keep my house at between 72 and 74 degrees. My gas consumption will be zero but I don't know about the electric cost. So far I really like them. The heat isn't dry like the furnace.

Weatherstripping can help, if you have drafty windows. That's kind of common in the temperate climes, where it doesn't get too cold.

Default About the Amish power surge heaters

Since the Amish don't believe in electricity where did they come up with the power surge heaters?
