Default Basic foodstuff more expensive

Prices for basic foodstuff, especially dairy related products, are getting more expensive for Americans. And the rise in prices outpaces the rise in cost of living. So even with inflation taken into account, food is getting more expensive.

Led by milk, food prices keep climbing, climbing, climbing - Dec. 20, 2007

Quote:
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages rose 4.7 percent since the beginning of the year through November, outpacing the 4.3 percent increase in the overall cost-of-living, according to the federal government's Consumer Price Index.

Everyday foods like fruits and vegetables, beef, poultry and cereals are on the rise. The price of milk is the biggest culprit, with a staggering increase of 23.2 percent through November. And with basic foods like dairy and wheat driving up the cost of other groceries, almost everyone is feeling the squeeze.
The article doesn't offer any solutions or foreseeable good news.... so I'm wondering, how are people coping with this? Or if people are even feeling it yet?

I haven't noticed it myself, but that's more of an indication that I eat out too much....

I've been able to save money on food by joining our local co-op. Because the co-op isn't trying to make a profit, it offers "Basic Buys" which are really cheap. Things like cheese, ww flour, eggs, bananas, and beans. You can also buy bulk from the catalogue for just 10% over cost.

I've had great experiences with online grocery shopping through Vons (a supermarket chain in Socal).

The selection is pretty awesome. You can go on their website and browse through pretty much all the major brands for the main types of groceries you need (milk, eggs, cereal, fruits, vegetables, etc).

The one tricky thing is that they don't sync their online and real world inventory, so sometimes you order a "large Minute Maid orange juice," you have to also specified that you are willing to take a smaller size of the same brand, or the same size but a different brand.

If you are not a super picky person about specific brand you will be pretty happy with the service.

The delivery charge is about $15 IIRC, but they constantly sent me $10 coupons which makes the delivery practically free!

thanks for the reply! you got me curious enough to go to vons.com (same as safeway.com it seems) and put in my zipcode but they don't deliver here. someone mentioned peapod.com before but nada for my zip on there too.

maybe it's not an option for the bronx at all! that's easy. lol

It feels like meat is a lot more expensive these days.

It also doesn't help that there are so many confusing choices today: free range, organic, organic free range, local, local organic free range. I feel like if I just bought "regular" meat I'm buying one filled with hormones and produced by torture.

Basic ingredients are more expensive. Eggs, meat, all dairy products and most other items. What I did notice was that organic options were not jumping in cost as fast so the cost difference between the two is not nearly as much as it used to be.

That's interesting Lucille. What type of products do you usually buy organic?
