Reputation: | Our local Target is not a Super Target, but it does have a small grocery section. We have a few condiments we buy regularly and have not figured out a good way to make from scratch. I noticed that Smuckers caramel sauce was about 50 cents cheaper at Target compared to our grocery store. When I bought groceries this week I noticed that Gluden's mustard was 30 cents cheaper at Target then the grocery. So I started glancing through what they had in stock and just about any of the items I knew the prices for were significantly cheaper at Target. Since we hit Target every week it makes sense to buy them on that trip. This might just be an oddity due to the grocery chains we have in town but there might be some real savings in comparing the two. |

Reputation: | I've also had great luck with both Target and Walmart for personal hygiene products. It seems that they're way cheaper than drug stores and supermarkets for soap, shampoo, razors, and things like that. |

| Member | I agree on both, plus in my area we have a store called BigLots! and stop there every couple of weeks to see what new stock they have. However, with current gas prices I have to watch how far I travel between stores or I may not be saving in the end. |

Reputation: | If you live near a Costco, it might be worth getting the membership. We bought spices like black pepper and cinnamon from Costco back in May 2003 and we still have tons left. They come in those restaurant size bottles and were about $3.00-$4.00 back when we bought them. I don't know how much they are now, but it's probably still a good buy. We now live about 50 miles from the nearest Costco so we don't shop there anymore.

| Senior Member | You do have to be careful buying spices in bulk as the oils that give them flavor will dry out and you may find yourself needing more for the same amount of flavor. Not good when following new recipes... Grocery stores and drug stores are often not good places to buy items and are much more expensive compared to discount chains such as Walmart and Target. I figure this is based on where they assume to make their money. They don't make their money on HBA so carrying these items is offset by higher prices to justify the store space. I do find that by watching sales I can pay less for just about anything at the grocery store. However the clearance at Target is great.

Reputation: | We tend to buy HBA items at either Target or Sam's (we don't have Costco). They are always cheaper. Things we use frequently we buy the big size or buy multiples when they are on sale and store the extras in the linen closet. Some of Target's generic brand HBA products are as good as the brand name and quite a bit less. Buying spices in bulk, we only do that if it is something we use a ton of fast. Otherwise we buy smaller quantities. The bagged spices at World Market seem to be fresher that ones at the grocery store. We get a Super Target next year so I am hoping that either spurs some competition with the other stores or gives us a place to get things cheaper. |
