Reputation: | You know what I hate about frugal living -- the lack of appreciation! Society at large doesn't stand up and applaud your frugal choices. Sometimes your frugal genius-ness is met with scorn and resistance from your own loved ones. But here on Wisebread... Frugal living makes you a star! The Awesome Frugal Thing I Did Today: I switched to a dry cleaner that is two blocks further from my old one (which was in my office building). Yes, I have to walk two blocks extra but I'm saving a bundle. I'm getting great exercise too. That's today's edition of The Awesome Frugal Thing I Did Today. Thank you, thank you, no autographs. Did you do something awesomely frugal today? |

Reputation: | I'm going to go through my day in my head and jot things down as I think of them: 1. We made, and froze meatballs with ground beef bought on sale. 2. We cooked and froze chicken thighs bought on sale. 3. We did all our errands the other day so we stayed in today and saved gas. 4. I buzzed my husbands hair instead of going someplace. We bought this buzzer four years ago, for $9.99 and it's still going strong. 5. We used up a lot of the leftovers in the fridge. |

Reputation: | Hi all, New to Wise Bread. I love this place! Frugal things I am implementing: 1)committing to cooking at home- last nights delight: collard greens and very jazzy black eyed peas (for the New Year and all) 2)committing to eating through my cupboards, ie not buying packaged prepared foods - have plenty of dried beans, lentils, brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat and bulgar wheat; i am coming out of lazy, instant gratification phase when i ate out at every turn and let all my frugal, heart healthy eats sit abandoned in my cupboard 3)committing to read the paper online more - i am a clutterbug ;( (that's another goal for another thread) and love the feel of the newspaper in my hands so tend to buy the paper. not only does this lead to clutter, destruction of trees etc it costs more as well..in fact, the local paper (Washington Post) just went from 35 to 50 cents...not that much but on principal, i find that depressing a 4)buying a tv or better, getting one from a friend (this is a possibility)...since I have been tv-less by choice the last year an a half, my mind has been free of the clutter of advertising, depressing news etc. however, the down side has been, my tendency to run to the theater and pay $10 for a movie when in need of the type of gleeful mind numbing we usually can reliably get from tv or at least from watching movies on a DVD at home. I hope now to just bite the bullet already and get a tv/dvd/vcr..this is going to save me a lot on movies which add up quickly at $10 a pop. I will try to limit watching bad news except for the presidential election process, the other benefit of getting a tv now...just in time to see how things go. peace&happy new year to all |

Reputation: | 1. Decided not to have chocolate bar while getting one for my lil sis. 2. Filled half tank of my bike and saved the remaining money so that I travel less and save some. |

Reputation: | I'm on my fifth straight day of buying absolutely nothing. My streak is about to come to an end, though, because I've got to get some gas and a loaf of bread. I can put that off until tomorrow, though. |

Reputation: | This mayb not qualify as exactly "frugal" but I'm so estatic I have to yell about this! And it's sort of is a way of clearing "space" and living more simply...I remembered hearing that the price of gold was really high lately so I gathered all of the old jewelry given to me by ex-boyfriends and took it down to a nearby jewelry store. For 3 necklaces and 4 rings (none of which I ever wear and are all, quite frankly, tacky) I got $430!!!!!! I took that $430 right over to my bank and made a payment on my credit card. |

Reputation: | I didn't do this today, but I do drive a '93 Saturn that I bought 2 years ago for $145. It had 220K miles, and now it has 275k miles, gets 32-38 mpg, and I have only put tires and brakes on it...last year I also bought another '93 Saturn for $125. This too will need tires and brake work, but so what? The car bodies are made mostly of plastic (except for the hood, roof and trunk lid), so they look pretty good forever. One thing I do get is an oil change every 3k miles - even if I have to do it myself. I'll probably canniballize the higher mileage car for the other - hopefully saving more money! Can't recommend these cars enough. |
