Reputation: | I bought an eight inch Global chef's knife a while back, and I can use it to reproduce most food processor effects. It takes time, but slow food is slow food for a reason. I ended up getting a similar, high quality fillet knife for the same reason. It's more a unitasker, but we tend to have a lot of fish in the Summer. I liked it so much, I bought my grandmother one, too. A toaster oven is a good item, too. Especially when you're only making two portion meals. I agree with the video game console, too. Hardcover books, when it comes to books I know I'll keep using. I've actually ripped books apart after reading them a few times. So, I buy hardcover whenever it comes to authors like William Gibson or Alton Brown (though I suspect the latter only has hardcover cookbooks).

Reputation: | Okay, this was a REAL splurge - so much so that my husband and I had several heated debates over it (him pro, me con). But, I have to say that the Delonghi Superautomatic espresso/coffeemaker is one of the best purchases we've ever made. You simply fill the self-contained water tank and the bean holding area, select the amount of water and beans you want to use, and press the button for one cup or two cups. The machine then measures, grinds, brews, and discards the grounds. If you simply have to have a GOOD cup of coffee in the morning, and were previously willing to pay coffee-shop prices for it, then this machine will more than pay for itself in less than a year. Neither my husband nor I buy coffee outside the house anymore!

Reputation: | I usually wear black Adidas Superstar tennis shoes with white sripes and these shoes last at least 3 years in reasonably good shape. Most other brands I bought woul last me a maximum of year, so even though the Adidas are more expensive than the average tennis shoes, I stick with them.

Reputation: | My father insists on buying cheap rip off shoes. They barely last him two years. I don't let him buy me stuff like clothes or shoes since he usually opts for the cheap ones but don't check the quality of the product. I buy branded shoes since i find that they last longer than the cheap stuff my dad gets me. I've come to trust a brand, but I'm not saying that branded is the way to go. There are cheap stuff out there that have as much quality as the branded stuff, but my father has spent more money buying a pair of running shoes than I spent that one time I bought an expensive pair 8 years ago. I still use them today. |

Reputation: | I do buy more expensive items, especially with clothes as they last much longer. Right now I'm wearing a pair of khakis I've had for nearly 10 years... well worth paying that bit more for |

Reputation: | What I have found with shoes is that price isn't always the direct connection to quality. At a certain price point the additional cost does not reflect additional quality with one exception. Having a pair of bespoke shoes made by one of the few remaining shoemakers with a good reputation. There are a few in the UK. A pair of oxfords or pumps will cost you $3000 or more but they will literally last forever and are more able to be repaired. Most typical designer shoes don't reflect that level of quality, your paying for a name or a style. I think for shoes the $100 to $300 range is the dividing point where the quality isn't improving in step with the name. Luckily shoes in that range can be found for far less if you know where to look for sales and overstock. |

Reputation: | It's a new purchase, but I just purchased a soda syphon (it is a little more glam, the Soda Club brand) on clearance at Boater's World. I've been drinking wine spritzers, heavy on the soda and light on the wine, to decrease my wine consumption. The Soda Club brand works on the razors/razor blade business model, with the proprietary cartridges being overpriced, but I picked up a box full on clearance and that should get me through at least a year. If that eliminates a litre or two of seltzer purchased each DAY, plus more than halves my wine consumption, then I think it will be very economical and also much more environmentally friendly. I'm headed out to another Boater's World today to see if they've marked the cartridges down any further.

Reputation: | Yeah, I agree on the post above saying that spending on good shoes is a pretty solid investment. Other items that i feel can really help you save in the long run are electronics. Buying cheap brands or rip-offs won't last that often and it would benefit you more if you buy a trusted brand name even if it can be a bit expensive. Also if you are looking at purchasing a computera, buying a Dual-Core laptop would be cost effective now but if you fast forward to a few years, the dual-core would be obsolete and many future programs and software won't be able to run on it. Then, you'd need to buy a new laptop. So, it would be saving a lot of money if you just buy a laptop with a Core 2 Duo laptop now even if it is a hundred or so dollars more than the Dual-Core. |
