Reputation: | I bought an eight inch Global chef's knife a while back, and I can use it to reproduce most food processor effects. It takes time, but slow food is slow food for a reason. I ended up getting a similar, high quality fillet knife for the same reason. It's more a unitasker, but we tend to have a lot of fish in the Summer. I liked it so much, I bought my grandmother one, too. A toaster oven is a good item, too. Especially when you're only making two portion meals. I agree with the video game console, too. Hardcover books, when it comes to books I know I'll keep using. I've actually ripped books apart after reading them a few times. So, I buy hardcover whenever it comes to authors like William Gibson or Alton Brown (though I suspect the latter only has hardcover cookbooks).

Reputation: | Okay, this was a REAL splurge - so much so that my husband and I had several heated debates over it (him pro, me con). But, I have to say that the Delonghi Superautomatic espresso/coffeemaker is one of the best purchases we've ever made. You simply fill the self-contained water tank and the bean holding area, select the amount of water and beans you want to use, and press the button for one cup or two cups. The machine then measures, grinds, brews, and discards the grounds. If you simply have to have a GOOD cup of coffee in the morning, and were previously willing to pay coffee-shop prices for it, then this machine will more than pay for itself in less than a year. Neither my husband nor I buy coffee outside the house anymore!

Reputation: | I usually wear black Adidas Superstar tennis shoes with white sripes and these shoes last at least 3 years in reasonably good shape. Most other brands I bought woul last me a maximum of year, so even though the Adidas are more expensive than the average tennis shoes, I stick with them.
