Reputation: | I have two parrots, an Amazon and a Barraband's. Because they're homebodies, and thus not prone to parasites or contagious diseases, their big cost is food and periodic vet checks. I have an inexpensive, vet-approved birdie soft food mix recipe. Boil an assortment of whole grains, usually brown rice, rye, wheat and oats, plus some lentils, and add thawed mixed veggies, which Kroger sells for $1 per bag. Both birds love it. They get pellets, too, but this is their favorite. Because the Barraband's parrot tends to mangle her cage liners even through the bottom grate, I bought a micro-cut shredder. I'm a writer and homeschooler, so I generate a lot of scrap paper, and we don't have good paper recycling here. That scrap, plus any other matte paper waste, becomes her cage-bottom litter. It would probably work for a rodent cage, too, since the result is very soft and fluffy. |
