Reputation: | I tried googling this but wasn't coming up with much. I have a little rust around my dishrack and a few other things that I'd like to get rid of. Anyone know of anything (that I would probably already have in my cleaning supplies like vinegar, etc) that works magic on rust? thanks! |

Reputation: | the cheapest white paste toothpaste you can find. If I had to purchase something, it would be either barkeeper's friend (oxalic acid) or a house brand "magic" sponge. The barkeeper's friend is under three dollars usually and does a myriad of wonderful things. The magic sponges are equally wonderful, esp. for the stuff that little kids create, but I have used them on rust as well. I think that the toothpaste or the salt/lemon juice combo would require time and elbow grease, but it does work. I use ultrabrite on tons of stuff. Very nice mint smell as well. good luck. leslie |

| Senior Member | Barkeeper's Friend. I bought one bottle almost two years ago and haven't run out yet. Works amazing. They make it in a dry form as well as a paste these days although the paste is more expensive.

Reputation: | thanks for the barkeeper recommendation! it worked really well except for some spots - but this rust has been in my tub for a gazillion years (I'm in an apartment). But I used it on my stove and kitchen sink and they are all sparkly new! |

| Member | Try equal amounts of lemon juice and vinegar. Both are acids and work well as a frugal rust removal, but I too recommend the Barkeepers Friend since it also cleans brass. I love the "Coke" solution which is primarily water and sugar you are pouring on rust. Think about it. |

Reputation: | I remember I used to use "naval jelly" to remove rust. I'm pretty sure that it's sulfuric acid, mixed with some other chemicals to make it more like a jelly than a liquid. Really nasty stuff, but it works like a charm. |
