Reputation: | @ GOTO, I'm a little concerned that your OB is saying that when there is not a lot of literature to support it. On the contrary withdrawal and periodic abstinence have failure rates that are twice as high as barrier methods and three times as high as hormonal methods. (Trussell & Vaughan, Family Planning Perspectives, 1999). I'm going to have to say, birth control pill, in a committed relationship, or condom and pill, is the best method to keep sex frugal. My friend calls this the double or nothing rule (pill and condom or do without!) |

Reputation: | GOTO, I agree with Looby. That is some very disconcerting advice from your OB, seeing as all the research doesn't back it up. Both methods are touted by religious groups as the only acceptable means of birth control (though some don't even agree with withdrawal). And I agree that if your religious beliefs don't let you use any other forms of birth control, well, then periodic abstinence and withdrawal are your best bet. But they're not all that effective.

Reputation: | @ Looby and Megan - you both make good points. My OB may have also been factoring into the equation the fact that I was exclusively breastfeeding at the time, which was my reason for wanting to forgo hormonal birth control in the first place. Breastfeeding itself has a natural fertility suppression effect. Combined with breastfeeding, these methods worked for us for two years. Our second (entirely planned) baby is due this summer.

As for my "frugal" methods, I've got a small stack of condom samples including a sheepskin one (husband is afraid to use that one) as well as a stack of KY that cost me .25/box after coupons. We paid $2 last time for condoms between the sale and coupon. Didn't even have to buy a weird brand. My mom's best frugal tip has always been :wear old lady flannel nightgowns and put your hair in curlers. If you scare off your husband/partner you won't need other methods of birth control, lol.

Reputation: | Found 4Play adult box sets at the 99 cent store - too weird, had to get them (there were 3). Actually a few smorgasbord condoms (minty fresh! lol), a tip card, and either oil or body paint or some other small trinket. The laugh we got out of it was worth the 99 cents...lol....and they were fun to play with. Saw the same thing at walgreens for like 5 or 6 dollars a box. You can also buy condoms at the dollar store. Expiration date good. Can't say I've tried them yet though lol |
