I do believe that different types of plastics can leach chemicals into water, especially if they weren't meant to hold water (ie a trash can).

Ah, I suppose that would make sense, probably not a good idea to dump toxins on your garden. How exactly does one locate a local co-op?

You can google "co-op" "your town". That will bring up ones near you.

Also you could always search on craigslist.com or do like lucille is doing and asking coke plants, or any food factory near you or even like she said, a bakery or something. I'm sure you will be able to find one.

Thanks, I'm young and new to the world, and my parents were never very frugal.

True, that is a GREAT line.

Kav, love the newish picture.

Please keep the rain barrel tips a-coming...I'm trying to figure out the cheap, safe and not-too-difficult way to build one.

What exactly do you need to do to "build" a rain barrel? Can't you just stick said barrel under the gutter spout?

Here's the how-to link. http://home.comcast.net/~leavesdance...struction.html
I guess you could go as simple as sticking a barrel under the spout. But you would still have to cut or remove the gutter and you would need a lid or screen or something to keep the trash out. And you wouldn't be able to hook a hose up to it to water. But the main idea is still there, so I would say go for it!

@ Khorrell-Thanks for the compliment! Also, if you are trying to go for the cheap cheap, you could always scavenge for screen. I asked the hardware store if they had any laying around and they did, so I got that for free. Also I connected two barrels just by buying this clear plastic tubing (1 foot of it) and cut a hole a little smaller than the tubing up near the top of the two barrels and then just shoved it in the holes. I guess you could silicone it in, but it has worked so far. That was only $1.06.

That makes sense. Someday when I get a house I'll have to give that a try.
