Default How many times can you wear a shirt (before washing)

Assuming that:
  • The weather is cool and dry.
  • You showered in the morning before putting on the shirt.
  • You didn't sweat and your body isn't unnaturally smelly.
  • You will be wearing the shirt the whole day, not just 1-2 hours.
  • You are not going to work or attending any fancy functions.

Given those conditions I usually wear a shirt twice. But some of my friends insist that no matter what happens, if they wear a shirt for the whole day they would be completed disgusted by the idea of not washing that shirt. Am I a weirdo?

I wear a shirt twice too before washing. However, on a hot sweaty Summer's day, I'll definitely not re-wear the shirt. As long as you're not going to any disgusting extremes, anything you can do to cut down on the laundry is good for the environment. Fewer washing machine loads = less energy consumed and less detergent going out the waste stream.

Clingy knits (T-shirts, turtlenecks) I'll only wear once. Woven shirts or looser knits I'll wear two or three times (depending on sweat & staining - I'm kind of klutzy).

My husband wears his button-down shirts with a T-shirt underneath. The T-shirt will only be worn one day (usually). This allows him to keep wearing the button-down until it starts being smelly (he's a typical guy who does the sniff test). I'd guess it's usually about three times.

well, I voted for twice, but I don't think that it is unusual for me to wear things more than that. Usually I change after I get home from work, and then I usually don't go anywhere, so I will often wear my "work clothes" several times and my "home clothes"...well, until they are smelly. I mean, all I am doing is cleaning, or lounging, or playing with my son, so they really don't get that dirty. My husband makes up for this, though. If he even looks at a shirt, he will throw it in the hamper *exaggeration, of course* He even says, "wow! 3 loads of laundry and you only had this *small pile* and look at what I had *everything in his closet*" Hmm, I wonder why? haha!

Oh, but I do have a bad habit, I use MULTIPLE dishclothes and hand towels in the kitchen. It is bad, because I definitely use too many, but I always feel like there might be something gross or whatever on it from the last thing that I wiped, so I get another one.

I tend to wear shirts twice before washing. I also often sleep in my "home clothes" shirt too at night if it isn't summertime. With work shirts, I tend to only wear them once because for whatever reason I tend to sweat more in them, probably from running around so much at work. Jeans, on the other hand, are a different story. I often go 2-3 weeks without washing them if I don't get them noticeably dirty.

For me, it depends upon the shirt and what I'm doing.
For button downs, polos and other shirts that I wear to work with a t-shirt underneath, I'll wear them at least twice, sometimes up to three or four times...until I get something on them or they start to get smelly. The t-shirts that I wear underneath get worn just for the one day. Shirts that I wear to the gym get worn once. Shirts that I wear in the evenings (after a shower after getting home from the gym) and t-shirts worn on weekends will often be worn multiple times, until they get smelly or just start to feel unclean, then I wear one to sleep in and then toss it in the hamper.

I voted for three times, and then realized I am a minority. haha. When I was in high school my best friend was a guy. Sometimes he would tell me he has been wearing the same underwear for 4 days..and then laugh hysterically. And then I went to a bridal shower where the wives told me that guys don't like to change clothes. My hubby isn't like that though.. he has too much clothes and he changes all the time.

Like everyone else, it depends on the shirt. T-shirts get worn once, for the most part. Sweaters get worn repeatedly until they get dirty or smell. Anything clingy, like a tank top worn under a sweater gets worn once. Gym shirts get worn once.

And I agree with lilac on the jeans. Those can be worn LOTS of times!

I discovered that little gem when I was in college/uni and lived in a very cold area (-15C/5F in the winter, brrr) and my apartment didn't have a dryer! I once washed a few pair and tried hanging them in front of our space heaters (the place didn't have radiators for whatever crazy reason). Needless to say, they never dried and I ended up having to lug them off to the laundromat anyway. So I learned to stretch out the jean washes so I could make those trips less and less
