Default Interesting ways of saving money

We have an old glass 5 gallon water jug that we have been putting coins in for years. Someday we will cash them all in and buy something really cool! Do you have an interesting way of saving money?

Default the change adds up!

my roommates and i drop our loose change into a bucket, and once a year we cash it in and treat ourselves. one year it was over $350 and the 4 of us had a very nice dinner. i'd love to have 5-gallon worth of coins to spend at nobu.

Here's a recommendation for the guys out there: Get married. It is the best way to save money.

Ummmm ... I guess it depends on who you marry.

Maybe being married saves money. But getting married sure sounds expensive!

You should cash it asap and put the money into a high interest savings account.

Leaving it there is costing you guys money. I cash my change every few months. Though I do tend to wait until i have a lot of pennies.

A month or so ago I decided to cash 10 bucks worth of pennies, the guy at the bank thought I was crazy being able to put them all in their 50 cent things. Told him that I did a couple here and there over a week and it didn't seem so bad.

4 percent interest off a high interest savings account (online typically), can add up to a lot over the course of a few years.

Here's some ways off the top of my head that we have saved money:

Stockpile sale items.

Make my own cleaning supplies.

Keep my vehicles maintained.

Making lunches at home

Shop at home first - if you need to buy something, see if you have it or a substitute at home.

Shop throughout the year for birthday and holiday gifts.

Make a weekly menu based on what we have and what's on sale.

Growing our own vegetables (this is a work in progress)

Borrow books, CDs, DVDs, videos and magazines from our library.

If we really need to buy a book, we get it at a used book store.

When we go to the movies, we go to a matinee.

Always use up all of a product.

Yeah, sometimes you can also borrow books, CDs, and DVDs from the internet I of course am talking about sites like ABC and CBS who offer their shows online, and now ABC has a lot of their shows in super high quality, some are even HD. Check it out if you're looking for some entertainment. Hulu is not that bad either.

One skill that saves me piles of money is the ability to see unconventional uses for things. I built my bookshelves out of raw lumber, a few dowels and milk crates. Eventually, I might replace some of the crates with storage boxes, but for now, they do fine. I put a corner kitchen cabinet in a weird corner of my apartment, where it holds my son's skates, my computer bag, and anything else that's needed right at the front door. The shelf above my headboard was made out of a discarded dresser drawer, and I have lucky bamboo growing in the bottom of a cheap fountain that I modified. My son's walk-in closet became a tiny office; what little clothing he owns that requires hangers is in my closet. My curtains were made out of second-hand comforters and quilts, which are both insulating and washable.

I also modified a second-hand, reproduction roll-top desk to accommodate my laptop and speakers. Because it's a reproduction, I had no qualms about drilling holes in it. Because it's difficult to find a desk lamp that works well with this type of desk, I used an LED rope light, although the effect is a bit surreal.

Obviously, I get a huge kick out of doing this kind of thing, beyond the money it saves!
