Reputation: | I like t.v. too much to go without it completely, but I've been thinking about cutting back to basic cable. I often watch t.v. online, but I find it convenient to be able to turn on the t.v. and watch something whenever I want. To this end, I really want a DVR. (I'm a creature of comfort, really. ^__~) |

| Junior Member | Yeah, I can live without cable or satellite. BUT I can't live without the internet. Oh gosh, I would go crazy. I rarely watch TV anymore. Just don't have the time for it. I'm always on my computer instead. Hehehe. |

Reputation: | We gave up cable four years ago and haven't missed it. We decided to cut the cord after the company ticked us off w/ poor customer service. We thought about it and realized that we really only regularly watched two shows (South Park and MythBusters). We can rent both of those on DVD. Although we watched lots more TV, it was more just wasting time than anything else. We still watch TV shows--we have NetFlix and watch network shows. I don't, however, watch commercials. I can't stand them, so I tape all my shows so I can flick through the commercials. |

I just today ordered some sort of coupon for $40 credit on some sort of adapter that will be required to get regular tv next year. Seems without a newer HD tv or cable or satelite you will not be able to receive the signals on the older t.v.s next year. The adapters will retail for $50-70. My dish expires later this month and I am fed up with the added expense. Our local cable co. sent me a promo for internet, unlimited long distance and phone service along with 100 channels for $70 for a year. I am currently paying about $110 for the equivalent and HBO which I can live without. I am on the fence but just might do it as I am sick of dish and their customer service is outsourced outside of the continent and I HATE THAT! I tried just using rabit ears but got no signal here - I priced the larger outdoor type antennas but the good ones ran about $200-300 with installation. If it were $100 or less I would just take the plunge and completely dump the cable and dish guys. J~ Last edited by jenai; 01-02-2008 at 08:09 PM. | |

Reputation: | ABC has some real high quality feeds of their tv shows, some are even HD. I'd be all about going without cable, but once you've seen a football game in HD it's pretty much impossible to go back. A good solution would be to go to a bar, but being around drunk sports fans takes away from the game. |

Reputation: | We don't watch much but I don't think my family would want to get rid of TV. My daughter (9 years old) and my husband love watching shows on Discovery and the History channel. |

Reputation: | I've also gone without it in the past, without any problems. Definitely got a lot more sleep then hehe. Though it wouldn't be as easy for me now, since there're a few shows that I just absolutely love, and one of them just started their season (the wire). Maybe when it's over I'll cancel |

Reputation: | Had cable for one or two years and lost it when moved, to be honest never missed it. In fact I hardly see any TV, even more when you have DSL. Have 2 kids of 5&6 and never switch on TV for the whole weekend! there's always something better to do: playing, reading, cooking, walking, the beach... no need for cartoons and they never ask for them. |

Reputation: | We haven't had TV for a couple of years and life continued. We do stop by my mothers house and occosionally watch football or someone on a Sunday afternoon for a couple of hours. I get the strange looks when I do not know what people are talking about concerning t.v. shows but I listen to talk radio for all of my news and politics. The computer, though, is slowly taking the place of a television. I do not know if spending time on You-Tube is much better than spending time in front of the Boob-Tube.

Reputation: | I could drop satellite TV in a minute. I mostly watch Bloomberg TV while I exercise in the mornings and college football in the fall. My 69-year-old mother with whom I live wouldn't go for it even though I pay the $52 per month charges. She mostly watches news and weather, Wheel of Fortune (which we could get from the broadcast channels), Bill Gaither Homecoming on Daystar (which are mostly reruns, some of which she has on DVD) and occasionally movies on the Hallmark channel. It's increasingly tempting to drop it since it would save me $600 a year but I've not yet brought up the matter for serious discussion. |
