Default Make your own ketchup

My bread machine cook book had a recipe for making ketchup and I finally gave it a try.

The last time I had any of the big bottle of Heinz I bought for the kids it tasted awful. It had no tomato consistency and tasted more like corn syrup and vinegar. So I decided that trying to make my own couldn't be any worse than that junk from the store.

The result from the recipe was pretty good. The spice mixture was a bit much, it called for lots of allspice and cinnamon, mace etc. It used crushed tomatoes and that seemed to give the great consistency I remember ketchup having. I did find some Heinz clone recipes online so my next batch will be a hybrid of the spices from the Heinz clone and the tomato base from the one in the cook book. If I get a good result I will post the modified recipe here.

If your bread maker has jam cycle you can make ketchup by running it in that, or it can be made in a sauce pan. It is certainly worth trying!

If you get a Heinz result without all the yuck in it (corn syrup lol) please let me know! DS won't even let me change brands let alone make my own (you should see the face he pulls when his nuggets aren't tyson, grrrrr).

I'd never think to make ketchup in a bread machine! I wonder if it's really that much easier than making it another way, like in a pot or food processor.

I've never done it any way, so I really wouldn't know, but my husband made his own bbq sauce in a pot and that was delicious! And no HFCS!
