well, the list generally reflects all "non-essential" expenditures, meaning those goods/services the family believes they could eliminate without it having a major impact on their basic quality of life.

It is pretty easy to track by industry trends. Restaurants, specialty retail, athletic clubs, anything involving out-sourced services/membership dues/etc. are struggling to survive.

I think the trend is toward pooling resources and away from individual purchasing habits. ("Let's all pitch in and hire one together", vs financing a purchase individually). Co-op logic.

Seems to me that today's economy is making it very difficult for many people in all aspects of business to have the luxury of paying others to do for them. Although I do believe that the small business owner is the key to help us out of this recession and bring us back to a thriving country again. For the small business to be successful, tasks that are tedious and time consuming can be best handled through VA's (Virtual Assistants) and will play an important part.

Let's face it, there is only one business that is "recession" proof. But it requires a substantial initial investment...

Buy a liquor store. People drink when they are happy. People drink when they are sad.

Stay positive and keep looking as there are always great opportunities to start either an online busines for a new product, service or information. And the time you spend on doing that is very valuable especially when you do find that right niche!

Here's how I view outsourcing some services. I would rather pay someone to mow the lawn every week than do it myself (convenience). Some may think its a good idea to tone down on some of these types of things during hard times but I would much rather tone down on extra toys than outsourced services that I think are a pain in the ass.

Yup, outsourcing CAN be things that are handled around the house so that you have the time for your business. As the business grows, VA's takes away the tedious jobs ie., bookkeeping, data processing, invoices, submitting articles, keeping up with your blogs and so forth. Which then allows you more time to keep building the business, gives you time to think and create.

So, jonusb...
If I understand your "Bike" infused post correctly, what you are saying is that...

"boxing is just like a ballet... except there is no music, no choreography and the dancers hit each other."

hey, makes cents to me

I think the whole notion is predicated on a misunderstanding.

The world is not divided up into "things you get paid to do" (i.e. work) and "things you pay to do" (i.e. entertainment). It's just a false dichotomy: Most things are neither. A few things are both, or sometimes one and sometimes the other. But it's simply the wrong way to think about it.

I wrote a whole post on the many reasons (besides frugality) to do for yourself.
