Reputation: | hey PB, If I understand you correctly, I agree. I have always been the one paddling my raft past the bouys and outside of the designated swimming area. I've always found it curious how society is so compulsive about categorizing life into a series of "either - or" columns. I understand engineers rejecting the "wiggle room" area. It is their job to view everything as having a concrete answer. They are similar to the psych community, trying to force everthing into a DSM lV "category" with a label, lol. But as for the "rest of the humans", the logic escapes me. I do feel this tendency to "define" everything is perpetuated to a great degree by the "News". The less you watch it, the more you think for yourself. Common sense is a powerful tool in staying "free" from the smoke and mirror perception that you cannot function properly without "defining everything". Curiosity and exploration is what fuels invention. I prefer to keep an open mind and feel my way around on my own. After all, we were all born with a mind, so we might as well use it. lol (to think for ourselves) I do not "adjust" to what people "predict", especially "doom and gloom". I do listen to the information, but usually just keep exploring on my own. Things usually work out just fine. and no, I am not getting a flu shot...lol

Reputation: | In terms of what people are going to give up and are already giving up, there is just a ton of service oriented businesses that rely on us not wanting to do stuff especially around the home. The line at the car wash has gotten much shorter as people pull back on that. House cleaning is being given up as well as yard maintenance. The idea that you can have a robust service economy is really starting to falter as households move to cut what used to seem as have to have services. We did an article comparing things from 30 years ago to today and its shocking to think about the differences and those services that only the rich used to have. 12 Things We Used to Do for Ourselves That We Pay for Today There are going to be millions of service workers that are not going to be re-employed once the mindset is permanently changed. Service workers need high paying jobs to exist otherwise there isn't the discretionary income to support many services. SoCal

Reputation: | (Both Phil's and Socal's articles were good.) In my experience, most of the prepared food people buy doesn't take that long to make. A sandwich takes all of 10 minutes to make, if you're a perfectionist. Burgers take 20 minutes. The clean up takes a while, but, hey that's life eh. |
