Default Open Source/Shareware version of Adobe Illustrator?

Has anyone had a good experience with any of them? Any to recommend or steer away from? Thanks.

I assume you are looking for an equivalent to Adobe Illustrator and not actually Adobe Illustrator....
if you could outline what you are using it for it will help nail down some ideas as not all equivalent programs do everything Illustrator does. Are you looking to vector, work on animations, work with pictures, etc?

I've used Inkscape before to make some vector illustrations and pictures. I think it's pretty slick for an open source program. I don't usually do anything too complicated though, being that I'm not all that artistically inclined.

I tried Inkscape as well as another I'll have to look up for you.

I use Adobe PS for my graphic design, and as there isn't alot of differences between CS/CS2/CS3 for the average user so you can normally pick up a copy of PS as a part of CS on Ebay for $40 or under if you have some patience. PS will make vectors, and true vectors its just not as sleek and easy as using Illustrator. Elements is also pretty decent, but doesn't make vectors I believe, so it would depend on how intense of graphic design you are doing.
