Reputation: | I've never tried to restore a phot myself using Will's method, but if you have a valued but seriously damaged picture, a local photo shop can work miracles, and the results are worth the expense. After our parents had died, my brother found the only photo ever taken of the six of us together and NONE of us kids had ever seen it before. It was kind of astonishing that my brother even recognized what it was a photo of as it was so faded, flaked, cracked and creased. One of the restored copies is now over my desk and it is a GEM!

Reputation: | Hello, I think as per Will's suggestion - this is definitely acheivable via Photoshop or Paint.net. If you are not keen on learning these softwares, you may engage the services of some photo studios or portals. You can try sites that converts black & white to colored such as http://www.phokki.com (charges at around USD 8 plus) or http://www.recolored.com/ (not sure about the total cost) which may do the conversion of the black & white photos to colored ones for you. Maybe you can check that out? |

| Senior Member | You can take your photo to just about any place that develops photos and they can use the same tools (although possibly a different combination) you could get with PS to fix the photo. Even Walmart did this at one point (and possibly still does). It takes a steady hand and good eye to work on harder images but it can be done. Just like cleaning up a background or other heavy editing/manipulation for artistic purposes but different. It can cost a pretty penny though as most people charge by the hour (I charge $20/hr for such work unless its a simple fix).

| Senior Member | If the cost of Photoshop is the only thing stopping you from doing it yourself, you can always use GIMP (http://www.gimp.org). It's an open source (ie FREE) program that does a lot of the same things that Photoshop can. |

| Senior Member | Gimp can be a bit daunting to learn (I've played with it, not just biased, lol). as can PS. Thought I'd mention CVS has photo restoration advertised this week for 39.95. DIdn't read the fine print but its in the flyer and on their website.
