It is frustrating that the companies are forcing their clerks to push these products. I hope that they are getting credit for trying, even if we all refuse!

I have never had a problem giving my phone number...I'm curious about the drawbacks. From my perspective, it is in the phone book and anyone can look it up if they want to. I do know that I get tons of coupons from certain stores as the direct result of having provided them with my phone number. I'm sure there are some good reasons to protect that information, I just can't think of any. I would love to learn more.

Ronni, Congratulations on your new job! What a wonderful thing.

@khorrell- I don't have a landline, only a cell. So I don't get any telemarketers (or anyone for that matter) calling me besides my friends and family--Oh yeah, and a newspaper that kept calling and calling years ago. That is why I don't give out my number.

When the clerk asked me if I wanted to sign up for the credit card, I said:

"Sorry, I'd really like to, but with my criminal record for credit card fraud and identity theft, I'd probably not qualify."

My cash transaction was completed pretty quick after that.
My dad used to do stuff like that with telemarketers -- he'd ask if it was okay if he had a prison sentence and explain that he was on a break (only reason he had just answered the phone), say his wife would approve but not his girlfriend, etc. and go on and on for a half-hour or so. That was before "talk time" got measured -- if I do something like that now, I get hung up on.

Still, I say "no thanks" to the in-store offers though there can be perks with store cards. The only place it happens to me is at Target but I don't get out (to shopping places) much.

I hate the warranty pitches and ask if there is something wrong with the product that requires a purchased warranty; I got a stunned, scared look from a cashier once and a knowing smile from the person in line behind me.

I guess we are alike -- I just want to make my purchase and leave!!! Consumer-store bonding just doesn't seem right.
