Hello. Question. We have pared down to one vehicle, my 2008 Honda CRV, proudly displaying an odometer reading of 217,000 miles. Now - we need to move to NY from NC come August, and we add a second child in April. Do we hold onto the Honda (She's never EVER needed an ounce of maintenance or repair EVER - spotted it a timing belt at 175,000, but gas and oil changes only. For true.) or give her away and look for another car with less mileage?

How can we find a car that will run that well, with less miles for practically nothing?

You're 2008 Honda has 200,000 miles on it!!???

Our 91 Honda ran like a champ. We got rid of it just this year because it got into a fight with a tree and didn't win. And after being wrapped around the tree it still ran!

I'm gonna guess its not a 2008 Honda...that would be some mileage for a car thats only a couple months old. Even assumingthey bought the first one off the line.

Many hondas, toyotas, etc last 200-400k miles easy. Unfortunately this is good for you in costs of buying and using a car, but not in looking at a new(er) vehicle as the trade-in/resale value isn't much. Depending on where in NY you are moving your CRV may last ages. You don't really need a car in the city and you may not do much drving upstate either.

My 1995 Accord started costing too much (and thats doing most repairs ourselves) once it passed about 290k. Its now the back up beater car and still runs but its not pretty lol. I just got a used Mit Outlander (needing something to haul our trail gear, etc) this past May for a sweet deal w/ low miles. I'm taking a beating from the family on not going with a CRV but even buying one used was outrageous. If the Mit lasts me 10+ yrs like the Accord I'll be shocked.

That's a 1998 Honda CRV.

And yes, there really is zero trade-in value on it, what with the Dr. Pepper artfully splashed across the ceiling. It's mostly sentimental value, although I can say I've gotten so much good wear out of it so far.

I know that Hondas and Subarus last almost forever - anything else I should look into when thinking about a new used car?

This may be a dumb question but do you have Toyota cars over there? I have a little 1998 1300 Starlet that's only done 88,000 miles. Its a Japanese import, those are common here in NZ but I swear by Toyota, the parts are cheap and they are easy to fix, that sure keeps the car costs down.

As long as you have reliable transportation in that 1998 Honda, hang onto it. You might start researching and saving for a replacement vehicle in the meantime. It would be nice to have a goto plan for when the Honda starts to break down.

As long as the CRV is reliable, I'd keep it, but start saving towards a newer car. You should be able to get a decent used car for $5-8k, or a nice almost-new one for less than $13k.

If you feel like you could scrape up the money now, I would do a little research to see if it will cost you more to buy a car in NY versus NC. Pick a model, year range and mileage range that you like, and then use cars.com or another used-car-buying site to look up that same type of car in both locations.
