Default Shopping for a new vacuum

Hello, friends! I'm still new to the forum but thought ya'll might have good tips on wise vacuum purchases. I'm leaning toward the Oreck XL because it's really lightweight (takes up less space too).

And it has this antimicrobial feature that eliminates smelliness and germs that might multiply in there. My allergies really like that, esp since vacuuming in general can be hard on my sinuses. It's a bit of a splurge, but I'd rather get one that lasts for a while-- and doesn't make me sneeze!-- than end up with a gazillion dinky, cheapo ones. Any ideas?

Well, I'm no vacuum expert, but it's one of the household purchases on my list for the distant future when our current cheap-o vacuum dies. I usually start my searches for stuff like this at consumersearch. Here's their take on upright vacuums. That article claims that the Oreck XL as a middle of the pack in suction performance, but definitely lighter weight than the competition. I guess it's the tradeoff for a lighter vacuum.

I'm not entirely convinced the the antimicrobial feature is much beyond marketing hype. What purpose does it serve? I found this quote on the efficacy of air filter:

"Antimicrobial protection. Because filters tend to collect moisture and can therefore become breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses, some manufacturers have their products treated with antimicrobial agents. Not only is there no proof that this improves health, but the toxic antimicrobial chemicals can themselves be released into the air. In addition, some scientists are concerned that overuse of antimicrobial agents will create resistant strains of bacteria."

Granted this was in regards to air filters, but I feel it applies equally well to vacuums.

Default Dunno if you value CR opinion, but they covered

vacuums in the upcoming issue, which I have not yet gotten. A few well placed minutes in the mag section of a bookstore might get you some good info. Oh wait, do they wrap CR? I can't remember. If they do, then let me know and I'll get you the info.

regards,
leslie

Hey, jkuo13. Thanks for chiming in! Yeah, I'm really big on the lightweight appeal. I investigated the microbial agent some more and found this helpful Oreck XL infomercial video that goes over it. The germophobe in me swoons!

I have heard great things about Oreck from people who use them -- and say they work well and last forever. I am in the process of changing my floors (well hopefully soon) so I haven't bought one but plan to for my next purchase. I have a bagless Hoover now and things keep getting stuck in the piping.

Sounds like it's go-time for the bagless Hoover. I'm looking now at prices and it appears that the Oreck XL is actually on sale!

It's still a bit pricey, but at least reliable. My friend said they have a great warranty and fix-it policy too. You just bring it into any store and they work their magic!

I recently went vacuum shopping and noticed most, ifnot all, uprights are now bagless. Even the cheapo Dirt Devil ones. In my opinion, Oreck and Bissel seem pretty reliable. Yes, I once owned a Dirt Devil and that cursed thing worked like crap.

My friends rave about cannister vacs- are they really that wonderful?

Ok, after watching the marketing video from Oreck, I know the antibacterial shield is pure hype. They're using the same public germ-phobia that made anti-bacterial soap so pervasive. The antimicrobial agents just aren't a good idea. When they become widespread, they only foster an environment which favors resistant bacteria.

IMO, don't let the antimicrobial shield be a selling point. It's pretty meaningless. You're better off just wiping off the vacuum with alcohol or warm soapy water.

We have the exact same problem with our Hoover bagless. We have to use a coat hanger to get the blocked tubes cleaned all the time. They plug up with dust and dog hair.

We initially wanted to get a Dyson but we saw these Infinity ones that seemed to have higher ratings as far as suction and they are much cheaper. They have also dropped about $50 in the last year. Bed Bath & Beyond was carrying them and their 20% off coupon could be used on them. They also have a motorized hand brush, something we really wanted for the dog hair issue.

Hey, Lucille.

By the way I love that name. I'm skeptical of the Euro-Pro. I really doubt it'll last that long and end up being worth the $200. I'm skeptical of appliance brands without good warranties and brand credibility. Which is funny because I wear name-brand less clothes all day, but when it comes to vacuums, I really trust the Oreck seal. Maybe it has something to do with Davey Oreck the adorable spokesperson man..

But given all the good things I've heard I think the Oreck XL is worth it.
