Reputation: | I first walked it in 2001 and since then 6 members of my family have done it, with my daughter about to do her second camino this year. It is getting more crowded, and you do have to be prepared to be flexible, sleeping in rooms with hundreds of others in bunks, and possibly with a night or two on the floor but it was an amazing experience. Don't do it because it is cheap (although it certainly can be, depending on how much of your own cooking you are prepared to do, etc)but because you will see beautiful scenery and buildings, meet wonderful people and learn a lot about yourself and others. We put some of our families photos onto a video if you are interested. http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=kLlQzkTfZu0 |

Reputation: | What are your priorities besides just travelling cheaply? I just returned from two weeks in Austria (visiting a friend and her family) and Scandinavia. I realized on this trip (and reflecting on a past trip to Japan) that a couple of things are really important to me when I travel. - I like to stay in each location (town) for at least a couple of days to really get a feel for the location and people. I don't like for the places that I visit to all blur together because I was trying to check off a long list of countries (I met some on my trip who were like this). - Food is an important part of my travel experience so I limited my spending on two meals each day in order to splurge a little on the main meal. - I prefer visiting smaller cities and towns to the huge cities that typically attract tourists with their museums etc. I guess I'm big on cost-benefit anayses. The most important thing about the trip is meeting your interests and goals, and if that means spending a little more on a few specific things that are important to you at the expense of a week or two of "vacation", then seize the bull by the horns. |
