Reputation: | I have heard all sorts of speculation about what people are going to be doing with their rebate checks in the media. Everything from paying down debt and buying gas to buying cheap plastic junk and eating at McDonalds. Were not getting said rebate check this year but if we were these were some things we discussed that would help save even more money by the nature of what they are. Buy more insulation for the crawl space of our house. It needs more. Buy one of those tankless water heaters to save on our gas bill. Buy a seltzer bottle to make carbonated soda out of things like frozen juice since that is still pretty cheap. Buy a water distiller to stop buying bottled water. We already do this and have been thinking about buying a larger one. Buy gardening stuff and seeds to grow some of those spendy veggies. Get a tune-up on your car to get better mileage. Use it as downpayment on a car with better mileage. |

| Member | To maximize the spending power of the rebate check, many stores (like Sears) is tacking on an additional 10% or more if you spend it with them. Worth checking out the big chains for their offers if you are planning on doing some big purchases at one store. |

Reputation: | We've considered buying more new windows. Of our 26 window house, we've replaced 8 so far and the improvement is remarkable. No more cold drafts and a decent improvement in our heating bill. Just imagine what another 8 windows would do! Of course, just paying down debt is always a simple improvement. |

Reputation: | We are buying two new bikes to replace our sad ones. We don't drive much but having reliable bikes will help us make short trips around town. |

Reputation: | I, too, have decided to take half of my rebate check and purchase a used bike. I don't drive much either, but even so my gas bill has gone up. I'd like to keep it flat by biking to the transit center rather than driving and parking.

Reputation: | I'll be paying down debt as well. I'd like to invest in better tires and a new paint job for the hood- it is badly rusting- in the car. also by lots of veggies to freeze and cook for upcoming months! |
