I've never understood exactly how laundry is supposed to work. I don't even really notice a different between using dryer sheets and not using them.

From my case, I have noticed people invest too much on clothes and accessories. I know it's important to be presentable, especially if you have work. But having a steady, flexible wardrobe which you can mix and match with is advisable and will save you a ton.

A lot of it depends upon your water and the relative humidity.
Fabric softener is very helpful for decreasing the amount of static that builds up in clothing, particularly synthetic fabrics, in less humid air. If you have high levels of humidity, static buildup isn't going to be a problem.

I've also found that, regardless of the humidity, clothing washed with fabric softener is easier to iron and resists wrinkles better. I'm not entirely certain why this is, but it does seem to be the case.

That said, I've found that I don't need to use a full dryer sheet for each load of laundry. I generally cut or tear the sheets into about thirds. One third of a sheet is enough to work with my laundry (moderate humidity, some ironing. I also have very sensitive skin so this helps keep a lot of extra junk that makes me itchy out of my clothing.) If I happen to find the sheet when I'm folding the laundry and it still has some scent left on it, I'll often toss it back in the dryer. I figure if it still smells like a dryer sheet is probably has some life left in it.

I also dont use paper towels anymore. I take old cotton shirts, nighties etc and cut them up onto rags which can be washed and reused many times. I have a tub of them sitting in the house and my baby grandson loves to hold it over his head and let the rags tip all over him.... he then packs them all back in the tub and does it again. If they get too filthy I eventually throw them away. I dont buy plastic bags for the trash..... I also dont often use the ones they pack your groceries in.... I dont create much trash, but what I have I wrap it newspaper and throw in the bin....no bag at all.
