I HATE Cox. They charged us $10 to disconnect our cable because a technician had to come out and put on the filter. Of course, they didn't say anything about that when we called to cancel. We fought it successfully, but were still really ticked off -- especially since the tech came out in the early a.m. on a Saturday morning after we told them not to come then because we wouldn't be available (since my husband and I both work late and desperately needed the sleep).

And of course, that wasn't our first problem with them. Otherwise we might have kept our cable longer. But at that point we seriously considered paying more to get our internet elsewhere. As I told my husband, "If we weren't cancelling cable, I'd cancel cable."

So, my advice is to ditch them altogether and watch stuff online, use Netflix, borrow videos from the library, rent videos if you need to, use a t.v. antenna... anything but use Cox. But then, maybe I'm a little biased

Negotiating your bill with any company is part skill and part luck. Many people have to keep calling back to get the magic customer service rep that is generous and allows a discount or what not. Legitimate issues along with price of competitors is another key in getting what you want.

I don't know any specific tricks with Cox. We down graded our package with Knology and they tried to charge us $10 for canceling our extra movie channels. They didn't even need to send someone out since they can change that on their end in the office. I pitched a fit about the fee and the third time I told them I refused to pay it and why it was an unjustified fee they finally backed off and didn't charge it.

I had zero luck getting our bill pro rated when we lost service for six days over two weeks. I even tried writing the customer service management with no luck. So we are moving back to the other cable company. We obviously are not the only people, the other company is charging people full fees and no deals if you move back to them.

Lucille have you checked if your state requires them to compensate you? I know with the ice storm the local news station in Maine advertised they had to, plus the number for Time Warner and Comcast for that department and what you needed to ask for (as opposed to just asking for a discount).
