Default used gifts for Christmas or other holiday giving

Is anyone going to give used gifts this year, or has anyone been doing this for a while?

I started last year, giving used books to a niece who was interested in specific titles. I happened to have a credit at a used bookstore so I got the item without spending cash.

Does anyone have a category (video games, collectibles, etc.) that they buy used for gifts? And how does it go over with the recipient?

I give used (but still in excellent condition) books as gifts to certain people. My parents are both avid readers and aren't really that concerned with book condition, as long as it's not falling apart and can still be read. My parents and I also pass barely DVDs back and forth as gifts. When I finally got the MASH complete series box set, my couple of seasons went to Mom as a Mother's Day present. She couldn't have been happier. I've also given used, out of print books as gifts to other people.
I've given my nephews a couple of toys that I bought on ebay. This was more of a "hey this is cool and I thought you would enjoy it" gift rather than a birthday or Christmas present and the items were no longer available new. The kids have always been thrilled as it's always been something they've specifically wanted.

I think the key is to make sure that either it's impossible to tell that the item wasn't new (books are good, anything else is more complicated as everything comes wrapped) or that the recipient is okay with getting something used.

I have given used books regularly. Just today my 10 year old gave me her Christmas wish list, and I said, "You know, if I get these used you'll get more," to which she quickly agreed.

When my children were younger, I would get them gently used toys as presents but now there doesn't seem to be as much opportunity. Primarily because they don't get many toys, but also because they are looking more for specific items.

I am also a wicked regifter. Fortunately, my family encourages it!

I don't mind giving or getting used gifts in general. However, this past Christmas my husband and I decided to forgo gifts altogether -- and we let everyone know in enough time that they wouldn't be stuck giving us anything, either. It worked out really well. We not only saved a lot of money, we enjoyed having more time to spend with each other and others. I think it will be our new holiday tradition

I've never really been one for Christmas gifts. I mean, sure, I like getting them, but having to buy them always feels like a metaphorical punch in the face to my wallet.
