Is a potluck dinner a gathering where everyone brings a plate of food? I remember coming to New Zealand and someone telling me to "bring a plate" - I didn't have a clue why, lol.
Yup, that's exactly what it is. Often guests will bring some sort of covered dish or casserole to share -- in the U.S. Midwest, they're often called "covered dish suppers." It's a great frugal way to have a party. I have a birthday coming up, and I'm having a low-key, frugal party, and am asking everyone to bring a dish to share. So much easier to deal with than putting on a fancy dinner for everyone, and it builds community as well.

Default Steel cut oats

I'm not sure if this really counts as cooking from scratch but here goes. I cooked steel cut oats this morning. It takes 30 minutes to cook so I don't normally bother, but it is so worth the wait. I added a banana, cinnamon, and milk. It was delicious.

jhanseth :0) The pot luck dinners sound great. I've been to a couple a long time ago, maybe I need to get out a bit more and make some friends, lol.

simplylinda, hi! I reackon the oats count, 30 mins is a long time for oats. Why are they called Steel cut? I'm learning so much on these forums from people in other countries it's amazing :0)

This is semi-"from scratch," but it's more "from scratch" than ordering a pizza. It's from a Betty Crocker cookbook:

Philly Cheesesteak Pizza:

Spread 2 Tbsp mustard-mayo mix on 12" - 14" pizza crust. Top with 8 oz thin-sliced roast beef, 2 cups cooked bell peppers and onions stir-fry mix, and 2 cups shredded American cheese. Bake 8-10 minutes.

It was delicious, and much cheaper than ordering in!

They look great. Do you mind passing along the recipe?

Yesterday I made my first attempt at making banana bread. It's pretty yummy considering I don't have much experience baking!

Hi Honest Dollar, that sounds lovely, what a great idea :0)

Jess, mung beans are used for sprouting, small and you don't have to soak them. You can read about them here Mung bean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :0)

Michelle, that bread looks sooo good, it's amazing what we can do if we give it a go eh :0)

You can find the recipe for the fritters on my new blog. I've just added a signature so hopefully it will work. I'm going to alter the recipe slightly by adding different spices and maybe some seeds of some sort. They were ok but could maybe do with some more flavor.

Thanks so much!!! I love tweaking recipes by using different spices.

I'm checking out your blog...

Good one, hey maybe we could come up with some great recipe between us. I'd love to hear how you get on with the tweaking. It could be a good way to promote interraction. Do you have a blog? :0)
