Reputation: | I was wondering what type of seafood people ate and how much they spend on seafood on a weekly basis. We tend to eat mostly croaker and spend about $10/week, average, on fish. Cost wise its probably on the very low end of the spectrum. My daughter loves fish. |

Reputation: | We don't eat as much fish as I would like, primarily due to the cost and the short fridge life. The vegetarian child and the picky other kids don't really encourage me to cook it either. We do eat shrimp sometimes, and fish occasionally, usually tilapia or salmon. Maybe once a month?

Reputation: | Salmon: Canned/fresh/smoked/etc. Tuna: Canned Smoked Oysters: Canned Shrimp: Fresh Prawns: Frozen Herring: Pickled Thent here's the fish I get when I go out to restaurants (especially sushi yum). But all those are not too often. The ones listed above are in fairly regular rotation. |

Reputation: | I discovered I am allergic to shrimp when we moved to California from Hawaii (I could eat them in Hawaii, maybe b/c they were fresh water raised). But we rarely eat seafood. I buy an occasional salmon or some other fish, but very rarely. We mostly have chicken and pork. We avoid beef b/c of the whole mad cow thing.

Reputation: | It is extremely hard to get decent seafood where we live in the midwest. I buy frozen scallops on a rare basis. I quit buying most shrimp, quality has been poor and I won't buy any unless they are US raised or wild caught. I have read too many awful things about the lack of oversight in how they are raised and unethical labor practices. Most of the cheap ones tasted awful too. We buy cod about once a month, it is rather expensive but about the only thing of decent quality we can get fresh or frozen. I get salmon only when we go to the local japanese restaurant. I don't know where they get it but it is extremely good. |

| Senior Member | I rarely have fish, partly because I'm not an experienced seafood eater (a lot of it wasn't very accessible in Ohio while I was growing up and so we didn't really eat it often), partly because the price is prohibitive of eating it frequently, and partly because I don't really know how to prepare it (grilling really isn't an option 4 or 5 months out of the year here). I do enjoy a variety of sushi rolls, but it's a rare treat. |

Reputation: | Most fish is farm raised and I absolutely refuse to eat it. I know it's not as healthful, but I eat canned salmon, which I know is from the Alaskan waters and not farm raised. |

Reputation: | Seeing all these opinions and experiences mentioned, makes me want to never leave NYC LOL. Seeing other responses lately to my question about Libraries and this thread, it really makes me appreciate being able to live in NYC and having its conveniences. Makes paying the high taxes, less taxing. @FitandFrugal, I agree with the farm raised and wild. But Wild catch is on the decline due to over fishing and we may end up with only farm raised in a decade or so. |

Reputation: | Well, I'm Asian, and I LOVE seafood. My boyfriend especially loves Chinese styled lobster that's coated in flour/cornstarch and then panfried to a golden brown crisp in a ginger scallion glaze. . .sooo delicious. I prefer a lighter note. . .I love sashimi and sushi or a nice broiled salmon/tilapia with brown rice and veggies is heavenly. My boyfriend makes me salmon burgers sometimes and I also eat canned tuna (he doesn't), and on occasion I consume scallops and crawfish. However, I am not a big fan of the mollusk family (aka clams, oysters, mussells, etc.) unless if they're deep fried (because everything tastes better fried, right?) but I'll eat almost everything else! |
