Plenty of sleep, for both of us. It helps tremendously.

I also use a netti pot, on me preventively and on my son when he's ill. It makes a huge difference in the severity and duration of any respiratory bugs.

Hmm, I feel like this comment is going to be way different, and hopefully I don't offend anyone that despises modern medicine.

Ever since the first time I got a flu in college (and it was horrible), my best winter health care defense has been a flu shot. I got them for free in college, and now my employer offers them for free as well. It's a great deal for me because I avoid buying really expensive flu medication (which only treats the symptoms, anyway). It's also a great deal for everyone around me, because if I can't get the flu, I can't give them the flu.

I eat raw garlic when I've got a sore throat and lots of vit C powder in smoothies helps too.

The one thing I swear by, and bearing in mind that this might be a 'mental' thing for me, as soon as I feel a cold coming, at the first signs, I take two paracetomol tablets. I swear it's worked almost every time.

I have to get a flu shot because I work for a hospital.
I don't know if it helps or not, because I never got the flu before or after getting the shot. I do get hella colds, though

I love herbal remedies, but when a bad cold hits, bring out the heavy drugs! I guess that makes me a fair weather natural remedy fan.

I make sure to eat well through the winter, and get lots of vitamin C. This year, now that I'm back in a cube-styled office, I've also been using Emergen-C. I drink a lot of tea, and I LOVE Throat Coat tea. It's definitely an acquired taste, but when I woke up the morning of my senior vocal recital with laryngitis, I drank a few cups of Throat Coat, and while my voice wasn't exactly where it should have been, I got through the recital.

I also have a Neti pot, which I love, and I have a humidifier running year round. On really dry days in my apartment (even with the humidifier, it's tough to get the humidity to stay over 40%), I boil off a pot of water and put in some essential oils, either lavender or tea tree oil.

I am also constantly slathering myself with moisturizer. My current kick is a tube of unscented body butter.

I totally swear by flu shots now too. I've gotten them on and off for the last few years, and the years I haven't gotten them I've come down with wicked cases of the flu. This year I decided to get mine, which is free since I'm a college student. So far, so good!

I can't get flu shots because I'm on prednisone and Arava. Unfortunately, that has serious consequences should I ever get the flu!

I do use some cold medicines when we need to, but sleep and the netti pot usually get us through the winter just fine.

Even tough it is harder for me to do so in the winter, I try to exercise regularly, and eat right. I also try to get adequate sleep, and try not to stress myself out over the little things.

Alos, I swear by the flu shot. Getting the flu once was enough to convince me that it was a good idea.

I am so jealous right now! It is supposed to get down into the teens tonight. It may 'warm' all the way up to freezing tomorrow though.
