It depends on what I'm buying.

CVS for anything drugstore-y, I stock up when the price is right.

Severe bargain shopping at Safeway and Weis for food.

Target for miscellaneous stuff - who knows what will be cheap there this week.

All the office and big box stores for summer prices on school supplies.

Thrift stores, consignment shops, the Lands' End department at Sears (clearance only) and a store in the south called Beall's Outlet. On my twice yearly trip to the in-laws, I buy everything that is good and nearly free, offer it all to my mom and sisters, and then take the rest to the consignment shop. That gives me enough credit to do some shopping the rest of the year.

For the kids, I make it known that we take hand-me-downs. We've been very blessed over the years with beautiful stuff.

I like hitting the malls for the end of season clearance specials. But if it's not that time of year, I go to Kohl's, Value City or Marshall's.

Default best stores for bargains

Biglots can have some pretty amazing home decor deals depending on where the latest buys came from. Last year they had a whole bunch of Pier One things. Bells is also worth looking through.

Big Lots can be really great. I've gotten a TV stand from Big Lots and my sister got a nice futon mattress. It's also good for stocking up on random food-items like olive oil. Oh, and greeting cards are a great buy there.

Default favorite stores?

the cheapest of course! i usually look on craigslist or freecycle first. once i have made sure someone isn't just giving away what i need, i check out big lots. if i'm just searching for clothes, i bypass all stores adn head to marshalls, ross and tjmaxx. they have the best prices on clothes and shoes, particularly if you pay attention to clearance items. once, at ross i bought the most adorable dress for $7.00 on clearance!

Default Good deeds

My favorite ‘thrift’ stores for new items are: Marshalls and TJ Maxx; IMHO, one could find real steals in these outlets.
My favorite thrift store for used items is Salvation Army because of its policy (helping people who suddenly need help) and operating expenses ratio (my personal policy is to stay away from charities with O.E. more than 30%; last time I checked, SA was not overindulging in that department).

I like to go for good quality, on sale. So, I hit J. Crew, Macy's, Nordstrom, etc, but never let myself pay full price!
